Up for sale is this beautiful acoustic 17” Special non-cutaway – I built this guitar in 2015 and kept it as a ‘show’ piece, but I’ve decided to let it go since I’ve acquired another guitar to use for demo purposes. The guitar is in new condition, with literally a couple of hours of play time on it. Fingerboard scale is 25.5” - nut width is a generous 1&11/16” – neck has a medium depth “C” contour. The top is 5A Sitka spruce – back, rims and neck are “builder’s reserve” flame maple – some of the nicest maple I’ve ever had in the shop, and I may never again see anything like the back set I used on this guitar.

Five piece fingerboard inlays have pale abalone centers w/MOP wings – abalone logo, peghead inlay and truss rod cover - tuner buttons are solid MOP. 3-ply f-hole binding – 5-ply binding on top, back, neck, peghead and pickguard. Comes with a new Gibson tan/pink case. I’m selling the guitar as new with warranty and asking $8995.

There are 2 great videos on YouTube with Doyle Dykes playing that guitar in Mark’s shop and you can see how impressed he was playing it. A real cannon of a archtop.

A show piece is a understatement.

    Hot dog! That is....stunning.

This has me wondering what new showpiece guitar could have dethroned this one?

Having had the opportunity to play this guitar, I can confirm that it sounds as nice as it looks.

Haha - the 'replacement' isn't quite as special as the non-cut - still a good representation of my work, but basically just something to have here that visitors can see and play. The non-cut has been just sitting here for almost 10 years now, and I figured it was time to get it into the hands of someone who will enjoy it.

I think he meant 9 years not 19.

God put all your talent in your hands and your head always has a nice smile.

The buying experience from Mark is as good as the guitars he builds.

No worries, Mark - there’s a lot of that going around. My mother’s favorite story was that she once asked a woman with whom she’d worked for a long time how old she was. The woman replied that she wasn’t sure, but she knew she was either born in 1917 or the year before - 1817.

I must have found different ones because the ones I heard were older-smartphone recordings of someone demonstrating a cute fingerstyle trick and playing on an unfamiliar guitar he couldn't get the optimum sound out of (but a lot of fret buzz instead). In fact, I didn't catch the word sonorous so I'll have to search some more I guess ... not that I need any convincing ...

BTW, the fret buzz /string slap thing seems to be pretty frequent in when people try an archtop for the first time. Usually I write that off to it being set up as an e-guitar but that can't be the case here?!

This guitar is stunning in all respects. The wood and the tone I hear on the recording is superb. The great thing about buying this guitar is that over time you can tell the great story that you got this from Mark C. personally as it was the show guitar he used for customers. Not only is it true it adds to the mystique of the whole guitar. Some time in 50 years or so it will make to the place of legendary status. It is the same as going into John D'angelico's shop and he happen to have had a spare guitar that no one claimed, and you bought right then. Do you not think if someone was selling a guitar such as that would put that in bold?

This is another guitar that would be on my list but I just have to part with something. I believe too that the noncuts have more sound. Maybe Mark thinks so I too not sure? The waiting list on this guitar could be days instead of 4 years.

On eBay? My modified-after-seeing-who-posted reaction: Among how many other of its siblings built by your various, erm, alter-egos?

Ha - I've had the eBay account for many years and used it to buy/sell various guitars (and other stuff), but this is the first time I myself have listed one of my archtop guitars on eBay - my eBay alias wouldn't be very arcane to anyone who knows me (lol).

Dang, Mark. If I hadn't purchased a nice, non-cutaway acoustic archtop this summer and didn't have another guitar currently being built by a certain Italo-American gentleman in New England, this guitar may have already found a home.

Btw, in case you're still curious, this is the "demo guitar" that replaces the non-cut - 2008 Special 17" short-body.

No plans to "replace" this one anytime soon : )
