why not just add a kingsley maiden preamp pedal to an existing solid state setup? IMO, you're always better off having the tubes external...

The main thing though is that if the tube overheats or the circuit goes bad, your amp still works. A friend of mine has a genz benz shuttle 9000 and the tube part of the circuit is continually needing adjustment and re-seating. For me, i'd rather just have a clean amp and use a tube pedal.

Do the Henriksens have an effects loop for using a tube pedal, or do you just plug straight in, Jack? I have a ZT Club solid state that I bought for a backup that I never play. The stock EQ settings are pretty meh, but with an EQ pedal in the loop, it's much more useable. Wonder if the Kingsleys or similar pedals might work better in the loop as well, but I've never had a close look at a Henriksen to even know if they are equipped with one.
Need to pull a trigger on either a Henriksen or a Quilter some day,but hard to AB them in my neighborhood, let alone find either. I like the idea of a head better than another combo, especially the small Quilters. I think you've had an opinion on these 2 amps somewhere, will have to dig and do some reading. I always trust your ears.

henriksen does have an effect loop but - at least on the new amps - it's a stereo 1/4 jack so you need a stereo to dual 1/4 cable to use it. However, when I had a blu-10, I just ran the maiden and later my fractal into the front of the amp. The henriksen preamp has a ton of headroom and is very flat so I found it convenient to use the front of the amp and then it gave me convenient access for tweaking the tone controls.
I haven't bonded with any of the quilter heads. To me, they all have a high mid hump that I find a little nasally. There's a capacitor mod you can make by putting a bypass cap on the hot and ground leads of a 1/4 jack which I tried. It bypasses some but not all of the nasallyness. I'm using a fractal FM3 primarily so for me, the answer was to use a SS bass amp. There are so many great bass amps that are super loud, super clean and work great for jazz guitar or for rock/blues/fusion with a fractal or some type of tube pedal. For my steady wednesday duo gig (guitar/bass) I bring my fractal and an Alto 10" powered pa cab. It sounds great. Literally better than any "guitar amp" i've ever owned. The maiden or tube pedal would work similarly...

Thanks for the thorough reply, Jack. I have an HX stomp on a pedal board, mostly for delays and reverb, but find it a bit unwieldy to think about gigging with, seems like it would take some time to get comfortable with using it live.... hate the taper on the accompanying Mission Expression pedal, among other things, plus balancing the output on the presets is a pain. Guess I'm still pretty old school, though I know people are getting great tones with Fractal, etc. Maybe Fender will come up with a great sounding SS head with some headroom (if they haven't already.)
