OP here: my main concern is really good sound isolation (but without an active system). I'll just be listening to YouTube or a TV. Want to tune out neighbor and neighborhood noise.

Not "noise-canceling," but nice (from $ - $$$), check out Grado.

I hang mine over a boom mic stand, though I'm not happy with that arrangment.
I'm looking for a dedicated hook (or something like a hook) so they'll always be handy but never taking up space on top of my desk.
May be as expensive as the headphones, but here's a cool item!

A bit rich for my blood! Also, these would have to set on top of a desk, which is what I want to get away from.
    I'm looking at this:

With the right desk you can do it this way: Favorite Headphones?-pxl_20210718_224305471-jpg

I prefer this, though: Favorite Headphones?-pxl_20210718_224345809-jpg

Not noise cancelling at all. Grado, or at least most Grado, headphones are open-backed, and so you can pretty much hear all sound in the surrounding environment. Whatever else you can say about Grado (and there's lots good to say), they're not isolating.

My main headphones are Grado SR325e.
