Interesting feature: with the additional processing power of their new chips, Apple has apparently upped their demo game, with the new 18.2 software update to their latest pro phone “Memos” app, you can create much better sounding layered two track recordings. They’re advertising as for singers who can record over pre-existing tracks, but, if true for singers, then any instrumentalist can also use it as well, to solo over any pre-existing tracks.

Apparently, what makes this different is the ‘without headphones’ thing. It takes a lot of computational work to clean the sound of the backing track (that was played out loud into the room) out of the recorded vocal track. Without that cleanup function, the vocal recording would be an unusable mess. Thus, the feature requires the more powerful processor and extra mics on the pro phones.

I don't have the 16 Pro version, but this sounds like a great thing.

Here’s a 30 second sound sample. Wasn’t sure how to share it so I made a reel out of it.

So as an FYI, if you want to use this feature as a band in the box or Jaime Abersold, all you have to do is put an MP4a track into iCloud, tap on the file in iCloud and share with voice memos. Once in Voice Memos, you can add a layer and practice soloing over the entire track.. as long as you have the original MP4 file, which is probably either burned from a CD or so forth. I still have all my old ripped CDs that I burned into iTunes many years ago stored away, so it should be pretty easy to import them into iCloud as needed..

Here’s’ another iteration. Unfortunately, I think the audio from the song was added to the video which had audio by itself as well incidental audio..

Ok to best use your iPhone to record an instrument, you need a kind of tripod dongle to hold the phone in place, in the air, near you. You can see the singers just holding the phone a few feet from the air in front of them and just singing into it. It will sound not nearly as good if it’s flat on the surface.

This sound is not bad at all, it’s’ pretty damn good for a series of iPhone mics.

Sounds like a very useful feature. I have a 14 pro max, take it that it’s only the newest models that this will be available on?

Yep, I upgraded my 14 to a 16 pro One of the hardware and software upgrades was a suite of 4 mics added, along with new machine learning technology to isolate and enhance the audio. It makes a huge difference to regular podcasters as well.

My wife gave me an iPhone 16 Pro for Christmas, so I'll be exploring this feature. But not today. ;o)
I'm glad you started this thread, Navdeep.

Here’s a good brief tutorial on how it seamlessly integrates with Logic
