I’ve just discovered that Terry’s 1968 big band album, Fall Out, is on youtube (I see it’s on itunes as well). I’ve been waiting to hear this for years!

It's one of the few times you get to hear Terry playing jazz standards, and he kills on all of them.
He just burns on "Four On Six", chorus after chorus, each one better than the previous one.
While all of his work with If was fantastic (I saw them live twice, and the second time it was like it was Terry's band; he was taking all the solos. I came out of the club astounded), you couldn't call them mainstream jazz. The album with Tony Lee was very good, but the tunes they played on it ("Isn't She Lovely", All Blues and others), seemed to be stressing a kind of jazz-rock energy
Even "Fallout", which I have on CD, the album was a gift from the wild Scott Walker, who Terry served as musical director for, for a few years, doesn't contain any jazz standards, mainly pop tunes by Bachrach, which were very popular at the time. He does play one or two originals with a trio backing him, which were very good.
Scott Walker produced it for Phillips Records, and he might have been the one who chose the repertoire for the album.
They include a recent interview with TS, where he seems very low key, other than making the pronouncement that I used as a title for this thread.
I was surprised to find out that he did a stint teaching at Trinity College, and also had done studio work, playing on some movies.
Tony Lee does some great playing on the Bull's Head tapes, and I'm surprised that such a fine player was invisible to US audiences (just like TS).
Martin Drew was very strong drummer who also didn't make it over to the US.

I think I came across all those Tony Lee recordings via a youtube video a few years ago, I probably posted something on the forum then.
Anyway today I downloaded all the gigs featuring guitar, I only had a couple of them before. You never know when this stuff might disappear from the internet!
For some reason I don’t recall ever seeing Tony Lee live, though I knew who he was. I didn’t go to the Bull’s Head Barnes much, that might be why.
I used to see Martin Drew at Ronnie Scotts a lot, he was in Ronnie’s band. Great drummer, I think Oscar Peterson always used to use him when in the UK.

Wasn’t Martin Drew a member of the Oscar Peterson trio in its later years (after OP stopped using guitarists)? I believe I saw him at a couple of OP appearances in Toronto, one at York U (when OP was installed as Chancellor) and another at either Massey Hall or Convocation Hall. Originally Posted by sgcim

Ed Thigpen left the Oscar Peterson Trio in 1965 and by 1972 moved to Copenhagen.
Martin Drew was Oscar Peterson's regular drummer (both live and in the studio) from 1974 to 1997.
