LOUIS STEWART - New and Re-Releases (Livia Records)-069-jpgLOUIS STEWART - New and Re-Releases (Livia Records)-014-jpg
The reactivated Livia Records, an Irish Jazz label, set up in 1977 to record Louis Stewart, will issues re-releases and previosuly unreleased albums starting in late November 22.
The first release is the 1977 "OUT ON HIS OWN" - remastered and with 3 additional tracks, a 16 page booklet with lots of new photographs.

    Brilliant.

Lucky to see Louis twice, one in Limerick and once in Cork.

That’s great news, I’ve got a couple of the old Louis Stewart albums on Livia, they are excellent.

Yes I think I saw him at least 3 times, first at a jazz festival somewhere up north when I was at uni (that was the one I have mentioned before, where he plonked his guitar down on my table and asked me to look after it while he went to the bar!), then at Peter Ind’s Bass Clef in London, and I’m fairly sure I saw him at Ronnie Scotts too. Always played superbly.

By the way I just found this interesting site which lists all his recordings:

I hope they can reissue ‘I Thought About You’, with John Taylor, Sam Jones and Billy Higgins, that is a little-known masterpiece in my opinion (and a treasured possession!)

hello Graham, as a huge fan of Louis, I did contact Livia several times concerning a re-release of this fantastic "island-album" - furthermore I asked an Irish drummer, who performed with Louis in the last years before Louis' passing (David Lyttle), to do the same request...

Yesterday he informed me that Livia will definitely do it!!!

    ain't that good news?

    Groovy greetings from Austria

Yes, and I recently got an email from them saying they are going to release a 1982 live recording of Louis Stewart with Jim Hall, I never knew they played together.

so great that this company keeps his memory alive - unfortunately there are so many other guitar greats and wonderful albums, only available on vinyl up to now...
Cal Collins, Harry Leahey... (nobody seems to be willing to open the vaults of CONCORD, MUSE regarding those guitar gems...)

About 20 years ago, I asked Howard Alden if he knew why Concord Jazz recordings done by Cal Collins hadn't been released as CDs (when all of Alden's albums had been). Howard told me Carl Jefferson and Cal had some type of falling out and that this might be the reason.

I assume those same recordings were never released to streaming service companies and thus the only available versions are on vinyl. I had all those Cal Concord vinyl records, and I had a friend transfer them to digital (pops and all).

I received "Out On His Own" yesterday and it is a really remarkable set of music. He plays fully solo on a number of tunes and accompanies himself with a rhythm track on other tunes. The songs span everything from an Irish traditional tune to a Steve Swallow tune, a Chick Corea tune, a Charles Lloyd tune, as well as quite a few standards. His version of "General Mojo's Well Laid Plan" is one of the best I've ever heard. Stylistically, he seems to be able to play anything with remarkable completeness.; At times he sounds like Barney Kessel, at times like Johnny Smith, at other times like Pasquale Grasso (the album was recorded in 1976, however) and even Wes Montgomery- but always like himself.

This one you have to order as a CD, it does not appear to be available on digital services (at least not iTunes). Shipping from Ireland is not cheap, costing as much as the CD itself; hopefully they'll make these recordings available digitally at some point.

and an Hungarian sound engineer ripped some digitally - concerning "Blues on my mind" he has sent me an absolute masterpiece in ripping - not the slightest pop or crack - incredible... Interested?

Big thanks for this information about Carl Jefferson vs. Cal, I didn't know - so I assume, those precious albums will never see a digital release...

I was fortunate to buy a mega rare CD version of Cal and Larry Kinley - Mist of a memory...

    groovy greetings

I am wondering that you had high shipping costs... I live in Austria, got it for 5 Euro shipped to my country within a couple of days...

Shipping to the US from Europe, especially the UK and Ireland, has become dramatically more expensive in the past 5-10 years.
