Also see here, nice talk of B. F. with Tim Lerch on same topic.

At one point there Bruce comments that Barney Kessel basically "invented" the jazz guitar trio (guitar, bass, drums) with the first Poll Winners album.
I was surprised to hear that. So I went and checked. It was recorded and released in 1957. Sure enough, I checked some of my other favourite trio albums and they all came along just a little later.
But does anyone else know of any earlier jazz guitar trios? I guess 1957 is the year to beat. Any significant recordings with the guitar in a trio format earlier than that?

Can’t recall any earlier trios in the guitar-bass-drums format.
Nearest thing I can think of would be the Nat King Cole trio and the Red Norvo trio with Tal Farlow.
Jim Hall’s ‘Jazz Guitar’ (Pacific Jazz) was recorded in January 1957 but it’s guitar-bass-piano.

I have one great jazz book of Bruce for sale.

In case someone has not seen it yet: I posted some videos of Bruce playing the Barney guitar live in a duo with Peter Bernstein here.
