It may not be her fault but maybe the interviewer’s but I am very disappointed that Mary Lou Williams is not mentioned in this article. She has always been upfront through the development of jazz from playing territory band jazz with Andy Kirk’s band up to recording an album with Cecil Taylor in her latest years. She played an important role in the development of Modern Jazz being the mentor to most of the innovators like Charlie Christian, Monk, Dizzy, Dameron etc. Some call her the “Godmother of Bebop” because of that. And she wrote tons of arrangements e.g. for Bennie Goodmann.
