Jaz I think the Yamy sounds good and the notes are more distinct. The L4 has the more standard tone you would expect from an archtop; fatter notes with less sustain. I still feel the same way...
There is another way that I use a bit. You sing the lyrics as you write the lyrics. So step 1 you simultaneously end up with lyrics and melody. Step 2 you put chords to the melody.
Bennedetto A6 is an excellent choice, that's what I would have used. I just saw Barry Greene playing with a trio here in Orlando, with a Benedetto Bravo that had an A6 pickup. The tone was "stellar"...
That's what I guessed (and I wasn't even thinking of analysing everything you play that way, all the time). Seems safe to say that you're matching intervals rather than hearing them.
I don’t have the mental capacity to label everything I play. Just like I don’t spell every word in my head before speaking.

I think, but can't prove, that plastic tends to be worse in this because it's softer, and stickier. I almost always see more problems with the D and G strings on 3x3 headstocks, for whatever reason....
But do you really first transcribe a tune into a series of intervals? Even I have realised that I've become capable of playing (simple) tunes by ear, without being conscious what kind of intervals...
