I like the Top 20 idea - 10 was tough!
Now I need to add to my original list:
    - John Abercrombie
    - Wolfgang Muthspiel
    - John Moulder
    - Mike Moreno

and still probably more as I keep thinking about them!

I agree! Several years ago I caught Django fever. What killed it for me was playing with other guitar players and what became know as Gypsy Jazz.
Not much listening going on, lots of shredding, no dynamics, mostly fast tempos and a certain snobby purist philosophy.
Django's music is definitely not that at all!

But I must say the younger guys had/have chops beyond belief!

Now I just sometimes play jazz on my Selmer type guitar...

Exactly! He was just playing the absolute best notes for the song. He just knew a lot of them!

Might be quicker to make a list of players I don’t think have influenced me much if AT ALL (no reflection on how good I think they are, they are all great, just haven’t influenced me much.)

    my anti influences
    - Pat Metheny
    - George Benson
    - Kenny Burrell
    - Al Di Meola

    actually that might be it...
That kinda surprises me, as you tend to have strong opinions on Metheny

But yeah .. Al Di Meola is a strange creature .. I've actually listened a quite a bit to him at one point simply cause I thought I had to after all he is one of the big names, but nothing rubs off .. There is something empty in his playing .. Weird.

OK, that's it. I have heard some excellent tracks, mostly just audio, posted under your name and I'm going to assume that you (ie, Kris) played on them. Respect. However IMHO, you need to do two things: 1) stop telling other grown-up guys how they should conduct themselves 2) sack (fire) your translator.

I won't bother listing my other nine because they've been mentioned many times.
I haven't seen any mention of one of my all time favorites... Joe Diorio.
I listen to him at least every other day.

I think kris was just saying "list how many CD's you have by your favorites."

Which would put Pat Metheny on my list, for sure...

    Relax, I don't conduct anyone.

I sort of have two lists--List one is the ten I indicated above. List two is the list that wzpgsr posted above--a group of younger, more recent players who nevertheless have influenced me (except Izzy).

Then, again, I have a BIG ONE list. Nobody has influenced my playing more than Charlie Christian. When I pick up a guitar I have to consciously think "don't play like CC," or else everything I play comes out like swing guitar.

OK Kris, I would have a party jamming with you - I like the way you put your whole body into the funk, but your English could be better. It's got nothing to do with "conducting people". I want you to understand that there is no ill will in my words. (edited)

Laying down 10 without thinking about it; just 10 favorites who come immediately to mind. I'd say in no particular order, except that Wes would go at the top no matter who else I'd name.

    Wes Montgomery
    Pat Martino
    Kenny Burrell
    Joe Pass
    Jim Hall
    Peter Bernstein
    John Scofield
    Steve Masakowski
    George Benson
    Pat Metheny

I do that. Tried a few times to do top ten but couldn't. Thought I'd try something different and work back thru some of the phases I remember over 50 years:

Grant Green - on a Bluenote kick for the last 6 months
Doug Raney - never listened to him enough before
Miles Okazaki - because 'Work'. Still listen to it often while working
Julian Lage - he played in my tiny town
Jim Hall - never listened to him enough before
    Wes - rediscovering jazz guitar

    (nobody for a few decades)

    John McLaughlin
    Sonny Greenwich
    Wes
    Django

I'd also like to mention Mark Kleinhaut. Wouldn't say I'm in a phase, but hey... he kinda lives here and I dig his posts. Gotta get caught up...
