w/ so little footage of Gene Ammons [hard to believe but I'm sure his prison time affected that] it's pretty cool to see this lost PBS video.
George Freeman tried to take a solo .... nice drummer btw!

great, but not a fan of the varitone electronic device he's using...a lot of guys were using them in that era but they sounded strange ...esp by todays standards...

    cheers

Yeah, not a Varitone fan either but many tenor players were using them circa '70 and over the yrs I've learned to tune it out and just concentrate on the notes.
And w the scarcity of Jug on video I wouldn't mind if he just played nose flute ala Kirk.

    Nea,

seems like everyone used that thing back in the day, even Sonny Stitt...

Love me some Jug. Since we are looking at I Got Rhythm in the standards thread, check this oot:

I got those cuts from my Rhythm Changes Playlist of 230 songs... then my external hard drive crapped it's pants. I hate technology, sorry folks. The varitone is the least of it

That looks like it belongs in 2001, A Space Odyssey

Varitone: This jazz is too important for me to allow you to jeopardize it.

Charile Parker: Man, just let me play!

Varitone: I'm sorry, Charles. I'm afraid I can't do that

I caught Jug live when I went to to the Charles Mingus "Great Concert" at Philharmonic Hall.
    What a concert!
