There are a lot of beautiful flowers in the jazz garden. This is a performance that I have repeatedly found to be beautiful over many years of listening.

One man and a piano--a whole orchestra through his fingertips...

Interestingly the song was written and recorded in 1942 by Fats Waller. One of the earliest covers of this song I could find was actually by Chet Atkins. Erroll Garner also does a fine version of this song.

Of course, but obviously what some others think of as beautiful is eluding me :-)

Ah, I see that we do think alike. I just didn't want to say it out loud.

That's my Home - Louis Armstrong

The second take on that day? In any case, I feel any beauty that exists in this solo is found in how very natural, very unpretentious his playing is.

e: Barney Kessel is another who I hear that quality in - real loose, unbridled expression.

It was probably something Orpheus played on his lyre, but no recordings were made.

So true! (which is why I posted Gordon, along with Philip Catherine, playing When Sunny Gets Blue a few weeks back).

Dexter was a complete musician. He had it all: distinctive sound, command of the total instrument's range, and the ability to bop and play ballads with a personal, emotive voice. A great interpreter of the Classics. He was one of my early sax idols and continues to be so today. Wonderful music! Good playing . . . Marinero
