That seems pretty accurate. Remember that Jerry started out as a bluegrass banjo player, but found it too constricting, then moved on to guitar.

At the heart the GD were a country band, maybe carrying Gram Parsons’ idea of cosmic American music to its apogee.

I listen to the Dead channel on Sirius XM pretty frequently and find it worth listening to about half the time. YMMV, but on a good night I find the Dead were as out there and listenable as any group around.

    Jerry Goodman/Jan Hammer like Children.

Jerry Goodman plays both guitar and violin. Great trippy tunes -- like Mahavishnu Orchestra with hooks.

    Mike Stern??

What about Eivind Aarset? He's some trippy tracks, especially with Jan Bang.

In the original post he mentioned Jerry Garcia as an example and Scofield as another example. Mike Stern is much more like Scofield's and Jerry Garcia's playing than most of what has been posted here, including the video you posted.

No one's mentioned Robin Trower. He was regarded as Jimi's musical heir back in the 70's.

Also, btw just heard this today from the NRPS first album--Jerry Garcia on steel, David Nelson on Tele...Jerry really pushing it into the interstellar...
