The dances at Augusta weren't a scene but more like the social events I recall from my long-ago youth--dancing for fun, with most of the courting and pair-bonding components removed, or at least sublimated. Some of the participants were certainly trying out the skills they were acquiring in the dance classes, but most of us were just, you know, dancing. And the waltzes and two-steps were generally limited to western/country nights.
Of course, that social-dancing tradition is pretty much gone now--I think my younger sister (now 75) was part of the last cohort for whom couples dancing was a thing. And even by 1962, when I graduated from high school, various rock-based dances were starting to displace the lindy/foxtrot dancing that we'd learned from our parents.

She then signed up for salsa! (and she got very good at this).
