The New Mastersounds are awesome. Here's some modern New Orleans funk.

Stanton is great. I got to see his trio this past year with Will Bernard and Robert Walters. Killer show!

Soulive, definitely bringing something in their music that hasn't been around for quite awhile. There's just something about the sound of that B3.

They are great, but that kind of music has always been around, just gotta look for it.

Nice! I dig those guys a lot. The drummer has a new trio record coming out soon:

One lesson to a degree in funk bass. It works on tuba, too.

These guys studied enough to become Doctors of funk. Fuss on the buss, kinda like a mobile funk emergency room.

Love this. Not a lot of time in my schedule at this time to learn a new style, but after I graduate (next spring) I'll pay attention to this, blues, and playing piano.

I have a DVD Funk Guitar Rhythm I did about half. What would you say is generally a big difference in technique between jazz and funk guitar? It seems to me the chords of funk is much easier, but the rhythms are more complex and more integrated with the rest of the rhythm section.

I have a Strat (84 reissue 68) which may be used to it. jwright123456789 - YouTube

IMHO, it is key to have:

    1) no reverb on your guitar amp

    2) a MEDIUM-volume snare backbeat, no louder. Many funky grooves have been ruined by a slamming drummer whacking the two and four like he's chopping down a tree.

I think some old school reverb can be a cool effect for chord stabs or on slower R&B influenced funk jams.

Finding a real funk drummer is an entire thread topic in itself.

Why else would anyone play the tuba? Or sousaphone?

Just picked this one up today. No up tempo funk numbers but some nice mellow grooves.
