WOW! How did I miss this thread? Well, I love the funk. Old school, gritty, nasty funk. My current faves have to be

    The Meters (clearly)
    The Dap Kings
    Budos Band
    The Daktaris
    Breakestra
    The Organites
    The New Mastersounds
    Eddie Bo

If you ask me, funk sounds best on a semi or hollowbody. Funk is actually what got me into jazz in the first place

Oh and check out this: It's likely you may sh*t your pants.

Stanton is great. I got to see his trio this past year with Will Bernard and Robert Walters. Killer show!

Soulive, definitely bringing something in their music that hasn't been around for quite awhile. There's just something about the sound of that B3.

They are great, but that kind of music has always been around, just gotta look for it.

That was a little bit disturbing. I'm not interested in that kind of funk.

To be fair, you kinda have to watch a whole episode to get the vibe. Hilarious, watch the one with the hitcher and his giant thumb for slap bass....

One lesson to a degree in funk bass. It works on tuba, too.

These guys studied enough to become Doctors of funk. Fuss on the buss, kinda like a mobile funk emergency room.

Love this. Not a lot of time in my schedule at this time to learn a new style, but after I graduate (next spring) I'll pay attention to this, blues, and playing piano.

I have a DVD Funk Guitar Rhythm I did about half. What would you say is generally a big difference in technique between jazz and funk guitar? It seems to me the chords of funk is much easier, but the rhythms are more complex and more integrated with the rest of the rhythm section.

I have a Strat (84 reissue 68) which may be used to it. jwright123456789 - YouTube

IMHO, it is key to have:

    1) no reverb on your guitar amp

    2) a MEDIUM-volume snare backbeat, no louder. Many funky grooves have been ruined by a slamming drummer whacking the two and four like he's chopping down a tree.

I think some old school reverb can be a cool effect for chord stabs or on slower R&B influenced funk jams.

Finding a real funk drummer is an entire thread topic in itself.

  39. #138
yeah reverb is fine. i thin guitars were dry because they added it to the whole mix afterwards. cant think of a funk track mixed without a nice reverb........

    Drummers???

dont start me. You need some who can swing (which these days seems to require some sort of jazz education), who then doesnt mind playing simple. so many 'funk' bands are ruined by a drummer who thinks Garibaldi is the way to play funk, ends up sounding like shit Fusion. you wanna play over everyone and everything?? join a Rock band.

Anyone who spends more than 5mins lisenting to JB's is gonna realize.....

    i draw your attention to....
