2 shows in 4 days...
Saw Joe Russo's Almost Dead at Red Rocks in Morrison, CO. They are a "Dead-adjacent" jam band that plays mainly Dead music. Arguably plays them better than any other group out there including Dead and Company. Most of the players have played in the Dead or associated acts (Furthur, JCB, Billy and the Kids) in the past.
Great show--3 hours of non-stop jamming. Branford Marsalis was the guest, and he fit right in, as a former Dead sideman. All the musicians were excellent. Both guitarists--Tom Hamilton and Scott Metzger--played very innovatively. The drums and bass from Russo and Dave Dreiwitz were off-the-charts great, and the keyboard work from Marco Benevento was excellent. Branford added that jazzy, avant-garde edge to the jams which is occasionally present in the original Dead sets.
A fun show at a great venue. Well except for the walk to the bathrooms--a quarter mile of stairs to get to the top, where there was a line. And a good half a mile from the parking to the venue--uphill. At 8000 feet elevation. Got 7000 steps in just from the show.
Last night we saw Molly Tuttle and Golden Highway. She and her band are just excellent--such great musicians and entertainers. Her own songs were quite good, but I think the standouts were their covers of Dire Wolf (yes Dead again...), Go Ask Alice and Gentle on My Mind (Molly solo guitar). If you haven't seen her and her group, you're missing out.
Will post pics in a few.
