The music of my childhood! Fantastically groovy stuff, always puts a smile on my face.
Bobby Brown's "Every Little Step" and Michael Jackson's "Remember the Time" are a few of my favourite NJS tunes.
Now that I've been getting into a bit of jazz, I'm appreciating this genre so much more: it's heavily drenched in the blues, and there's that groovy 16th note swing-feel which just feels like a natural evolution of 8th note swing-feel.
Anyone else likes this genre?Last edited by brent.h; 07-14-2024 at 01:42 PM. Reason: spacing

I thought I liked New Jack Swing, but then my friend explained that a lot of what I liked was called Neo Soul.
Genres, bleh, there's some good stuff in there.
Bell Biv Devoe, Erykah Badu, D'Angelio, TLC, MeShell Ndegeocello, Janet Jackson, Tony Toni Tone

It's lotsa keyboard, very little guitar, and the headache-inducing drone beat seeping from the car with the megawatt stereo that's next to you at the stoplight. All I can think of when the thumping starts is "the bride's father was too cheap to hire a real band - I'm gonna go find the bar and the pigs in blankets". Then again, I may not know Jack. But I had to know this stuff to play weddings and bar mitzvahs back in the '80s and '90s. The guitar parts were substitutes for a DJ's scratching. I thought the S after Jack stood for something else.
This is considered the first NJS group and song. See what you think -
And this was the first big NJS "hit" -

Omphalopsychos started a thread last month on Jubu Smith, the guitarist for Tony Toni Tone. It has a cool long interview with him
