Yeah I like various flavors...Willie Nelson & Family 4 part documentary was released in Dec 2023 on Paramount+. I just thought I kinda knew a good bit about Willie, this doc is a fascinating storyline of Willie's life and career. If anyone has any interest it is more than well worth watching

His son Lukas did a great job with Angels Flying too Close to the Ground at the 90th birthday thing:

Really makes you wonder why Martin aren't building a WN signature model (one that I guess would have a "scratch gate" instead of a ditto plate)!

I'm wondering if I'm having a Mandela effect situation right now, but I feel like they did...and it was a huge flop.

Per the internet: "Trigger has a Sitka spruce top, Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, and a mahogany neck. The fretboard and bridge are made of ebony. This combination of tonewoods gives the guitar a warm and mellow sound. The Martin Guitar Company made a limited edition Willie Nelson signature in the late 1990s — model N-20WN. Thirty guitars were made with the rare Brazilian Rosewood of the original, and the rest were made in East Indian Rosewood."

I imagine they sold all 30 of them.

Surprising they haven't come out with a signature model. That would be an interesting topic--why have some of the most well-known signature models been from less famous or accomplished players than their peers, and why haven't more successful artists had their own model.

Of course there are exceptions like George Benson, Pat Metheny, BB King. There was a Lee Ritenour L5 for awhile.

But Les Paul--not the best jazz musician of his era. Current Gibson signatures: Slash, Jason Isbell, Kirk Hammett...Fender with Kurt Cobain, Bruno Mars...

Fender seems to have more top musicians in their series--Stevie Ray Vaughn, Susan Tedeschi, Eric Clapton.

    Anyway, I digress.

I have seen Willie twice in the 80's and 00's. Supposedly he mostly sing-speaks at his shows now, and his family and band do most of the work on the songs. That's OK. He's earned a bit of rest.

The pipes tend to go after you pass 90. Well before that for most.

    Smoke helps, evidently.

It does seem to, at least in some cases. Willie quit smoking a number of years ago, though. He became concerned with the smoke and switched to edibles. He's apparently still making a good deal of money since he went into the edibles business. I don't think I would recommend smoke as a way to maintain vocal chops, but I'm not the jazz police.

Willie still has a good voice after decades of smoke, but the wind isn’t so good. Still, he went a long way for someone who was a prodigious pot smoker well into his 80s.

And of course, the late great Johnny Gimble on fiddle.

Back around 1973, my friend Bob November (RIP) would go to the Palomino Club in North Hollywood. We were just teenagers and underage, but if we slipped the door guy ten bucks he would let us in to just stand in the back. We saw Buddy Emmons playing with Ray Price, Dolly Parton with her family band. But the most memorable show was Asleep at the Wheel, they had just released their first record. Lucky Oceans on Steel. The band all had Nudie suits on except one guy in a Tux-Johnny Gimble on fiddle and electric mandolin. What a incredible player (RIP)
