I couldn't say one really but i think that George Russell's
Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization for Improvisation
    is always worth a read.

quote=dirkji;70468]In the same style as we did the Top 100 jazz guitar albums and Top 100 Jazz albums, I thought it would be intersting to do a Top 50 of guitar and music books.

    Let's make 3 categories:
    1. Jazz Guitar Books
    2. Guitar Books in General
    3. Music Books
In case of music books, I'm not talking about biographies and such, but about music theory books, musical concepts, ...

Here's my list. I'm obviously a little biased since I am selling them (for a good cause though, namely the website), but I'm a fan of Sher Music books:

    Jazz Guitar Books:
    Guitar Books:

    What are your favorite books?[/quote]

As most books go on and on with particular lessons that combined with other books become too much information, I believe books that provide essential theory in concise format are the most useful. Case in point, my all time favorite is Arpeggios for Guitar by Don Latarski. I challenge anybody to find a book with more valuable information for fretboard understanding in such a short (49 pages ) format. Don Latarski's other books are great too but this is the best!

For Jazz Theory it's the Jazzmaster Cookbook by Jim Grantham. Tough to find, but written for a player with practical tips and hints.

General Guitar - Frederick Noad's Solo Guitar Playing

This book really changed my life. From not being able to read a single note of music, I am now playing some of the most beautiful classical music ever written - all thanks to Mr. Noad. His course is definitive and complete.

I'm only now beginning my journey into jazz - hopefully (thanks to this thread) - I'll find the right method to get me there!

I didn't notice (and forgive me if it was there and I missed it) mention of Herb Ellis's three books: Swing Blues, Rhythm Shapes, and All The Shapes You Are. These three short books take the opposite approach to improvisation of most contemporary methods: a) precious little theory, b) a few simple guitar shapes, and c) lots of lines and solos solos by a master to master as a springboard to creating your own lines and solos. Even if Ellis's brand of swing is not your main meat, this is valuable stuff.

    1. Jazz guitar by Jeff Schroedl (Hal Leonard Guitar Method, incl. cd) was very helpful for me to get started. Contains several types of jazz (blues, latin).
    2. The art of solo guitar book 1 & book 2 by Jody Fisher (incl. cd). Helps you to build melodies, jazz theory, chord-playing techniques with notation and tabs. Very useful for the beginner.
    3. For the advanced: Mastering jazz guitar: improvisation (book and cd)
    4. Jazz standards for solo guitar (Hal Leonard, with cd)

I really like anything by Don Latarski, and there are many to choose from. Very good at cutting right to practical applications and dissecting chords, scales, and arpeggios. Great for novices and old hands alike.

For the beginner, I like the Fretboard Logic series by Bill Edwards, as well as the BEAD Method by Robert Dietz.

And then there’s Mike Overly’s invaluable chord bible, Guitar Encyclomedia.

And, naturally, anything by Arnie Berle or Tom Kolb.

Besides the sometimes very useful book-titles (Mark Levine's Jazz theory is useless for those who do not master music notes, like me), I am still looking for useful DVD or video tutorials.

The Hot Licks serie is nice, but very short in duration sometimes.

    Any ideas ?
