Chuck D'Aloia: fantastic guitarist with a great track record. He has created a wonderful package with teaching materials titled “Blues with Brains” that will also be very interesting for jazz players.
In his words: ”There's nothing out there that comes close to offering so much material. For many players there's a couple of years of work in those lessons. I cover so much ground from simple to complex and everything in between. The same with the music, all kinds of styles. ” But he also wrote in an email to me: “It baffles me that players don't take advantage of my offerings..I keep trying though ..” So just a plug for this material and for Chuck. The whole thing is a hefty download of more than 5Gb.

He always asked $50 for the package. Now he leaves the amount to the buyer. Not out of luxury but out of necessity because he needs more income. In addition to the nasty Covid situation he also has a 'Frozen Shoulder' that makes his work impossible. In his own words: "I'm hanging by the skin of my teeth"

So if you're looking for some great teaching materials for this winter, do yourself and Chuck D'Aloia a favor.
For anyone interested, check out: Chuck D'Aloia Music

I have no relation to Chuck other than that I bought his material and think it deserves much more attention from other players.

O, wait, he's the guy who did the great "What's Going On" cover that was posted last week. Loved that. Forgot his name. My apologies.

And here's Chuck playing over a backing track to Steely Dan's "Home At Last." Great tone and feel.

I donated to Chuck's cause and he sent me a staggering amount of material. "Blues with Brains" ain't the half of it.

Here's what it is (complete with mp3s and video tracks, all high quality). Over 5 GB of material.

    Blues:

This section explores various blues chord progressions (min and dom7) with pentatonic scales, stacking triads, developing ideas, the Mixolydian and Dorian scales, the Half-Whole Diminished scale, Altered scale, Sym Aug scale and much more. Designed to expand your Blues based vocabulary. These lessons are short, guitar friendly, direct and to the point. Included are play-alongs and charts (with traditional notation and TAB) There are also lessons on turnarounds, using the alt and dim scales to get to the IV chord and a lesson on blues changes that deals strictly with the chord changes of this timeless 12 bar form.

    (1.81 GB)

    Chord Voicing:

This section starts with a thorough look at triad voicings and inversions as well as diatonic triad voicings and inversions on all of the strings. Moving forward these lessons will show you how to expand your chord vocabulary with a solid and easily understood horizontal approach to diatonic harmony in the major scale as well as a look at voicings in the melodic minor scale in the same manner. Also included is a lesson called multi-tasking voicings that may be an eye opener. This material is guaranteed to widen your harmonic palate. TAB and standard notation doc's are included.

    639 MB

Modes of the Major Scale and More:

There is usually some confusion when learning this material. A really effective way to learn this stuff is from root to root. Every example starts on A so you have to learn the defining note(s) of each scale/mode. I cover the 7 modes of the major scale, the melodic minor scale, the Lydian b7 scale, the altered scale and the diminished scales. These sounds will cover most harmonic situations. 12 excellent play-along tracks are included.

    499.MB

    One Chord Grooves:

This material is designed to open doors and present different options when playing over one chord grooves. Using pentatonic scales, triads, substitutions, chord scale relationships and other devices you will be using some of this material on your next gig as well as having new approach's to study. Play-alongs are included.

    287.2 MB

    2 - I Major - Diatonic Ideas

    3 - I Major - Advanced Ideas

he nails "The Dan" feel..again nice licks in G minor..and he is playing the horn lines !

I think Fagen played those lines on the keyboard and just had the horns play them..I think he would be too anal to let an arranger do it..that would take months for the final take

Glad to help, though to be honest, he's going to be helping me a lot more than I helped him. This is an insane amount of material!

I have it. For about the cost of one lesson with a good teacher you get a lifetime's worth of material to work on.

For me it was a no brainer.

I also donated to him yesterday and he quickly sent a ton o' stuff to go through. He included lots of his recorded output (CD's) with the download that I think is excellent. I would also say the "backing tracks" to practice his stuff are just great. Worthwhile on multiple levels.

While I had heard of Chuck over the years, it had been a while. I appreciate Tivoli's hipping me to the situation.

Chuck is the smoothest player out there. He can blow on Donna Lee at ripping tempo’s, then play a funky tune with taste. He’s been a fixture in the Albany NY area for years. You won’t find a better teacher.

I agree the backing tracks are great. I enjoy playing along with them.
It is an incredible amount of material for the money. Heck, the CDs alone are worth it---he's at home in a lot of styles, from straight ahead jazz to fusion to blues to rock to modal grooves.

Some jazz from Chuck D'Aloia and Art Bernstein (drums). This tune, "Bird House", is over the "Donna Lee" changes.
