I love this tune. I used to accompany a friend on clarinet on it before he passed away. The Duke Robillard version that the OP links to is really nice.
Here’s my attempt on solo guitar. I’ve been doing a lot more gardening than practicing lately, so it’s rough. I’ll try to work on finger mechanics and clean it up.
It's been awhile since i last logged in here, but there's a strange synchronicity in that i was just playing
'If I Had You' a couple of days ago, and here it is as this month's standard...
and so, off to the shed i will head, since there are still a few days left in the month!!!
In any case, here's a quick 'baseline' recording, playing the melody and changes from memory, and
without the benefit of my 2nd cup of am coffee:
Hopefully it will get a little better...

While I look forward to more news (I find myself in similar thoughts of getting an electric nylon) of the newly acquired guitar it occurs to me that a whole new can of worms may reside in the...
Secret to McCoy Tyner pentatonics Using forward motion
There really is no single secret to McCoy Tyner pentatonics but there is one thing that makes his pentatonics
sound sweeter than the...
All I need. Range is not the problem. Being heard over other players who are hammering at the strings like they are forging steel is. Unfortunately, I rarely play with other players and a well placed...
I prefer 17”, 3 3/8” depth, acoustic archtop guitars and a nice burst finish. The traditional burst WesMo would be my pick out of these three. I would like to play or hear them first before making my...
I think the take I posted on the first page of this thread is almost all 3 fingers...it does work!
I need to revisit this one. Maybe this is my next document some practice type thread I start...
In my experience we tend to recognise by ear what we play. So play/listen and it’s a virtuous circle (at least for guitar stuff.)

Measuring accurately is tricky indeed, reading a ruler held next to a string not trivial at all. I realised too late that I could simply have slipped a slide rule between the top and the strings...
Great and very extensive answer
Many thanks ….
If one were to setup a system to do
that today (ie with a pedal to ‘hold’ the
synth pad chord)
what would be the cheapest way to achieve it ?

It’s very personal. I play fingerstyle and acoustic 80% of the time, and a 2,5 - 2 mm action would feel very stiff and high for me. I spend a lot of time on frets and setup because I like very low...
I can recognize many complex chords by ear, having learned and played much of the GASB by ear. But I am not very good at recognizing intervals, especially those greater than a fifth. Also, if I am...
I've never been one to measure action that precisely, but for fingerstyle playing I'd certainly like it lower than if I was playing rhythm with a pick...
I'd probably want it right about where my...
