I love this tune. I used to accompany a friend on clarinet on it before he passed away. The Duke Robillard version that the OP links to is really nice.
Here’s my attempt on solo guitar. I’ve been doing a lot more gardening than practicing lately, so it’s rough. I’ll try to work on finger mechanics and clean it up.
It's been awhile since i last logged in here, but there's a strange synchronicity in that i was just playing
'If I Had You' a couple of days ago, and here it is as this month's standard...
and so, off to the shed i will head, since there are still a few days left in the month!!!
In any case, here's a quick 'baseline' recording, playing the melody and changes from memory, and
without the benefit of my 2nd cup of am coffee:
Hopefully it will get a little better...

Chord patterns...
As far as I understand Regspeak, you basically got two kinds...those right in the tunes and those that are implied...or can be imposed.
So a written chord pattern would be...
I’ve gotten more compliments on my sound with my Blu 10 than anything else. Even with a very cheap solid body!
I just ordered a Bud 6 for the ultra portability and the second channel.
Correction, I said that the SS deluxe cherry baritone had humbuckers. It has the same P 90s as the maple natural. The cherry is mahogany, laminate rather than maple. D’ Angelico has another baritone...
I like playing the same songs with different guitars. I’m planning on using my Gretsch for an upcoming gig of mainly RNB and 70s/80s songs, but playing them on the Cordoba Stage nylon string is a...
When you fingerpick, especially if you use nails, NEVER open a car door or lift a toilet seat with the picking hand, NEVER play frisbee, basketball or football, and NEVER NEVER use a cheese grater.
This reveals another gap in my knowledge. How are chord patterns crafted?
I know about a few devices:
1. different inversions
2. harmonized scales
3. tritone subs
4. sequences I've heard...
The sheets of sound comparison makes sense, he's hugely into Coltrane. But more so the harmonic stuff, rhythmically he's often pretty locked into 8th notes. But that's part of what makes his...
In the acoustic flat picking world many of us use a larger triangle shape pick (see below) with a thickness of 1.25mm and up. But when playing electric I (and others) almost always go to 351 shape...
Holy Moley! That's a fascinating story, and it all checks out in the book about him I'm reading. He was treated as God in DC, so it doesn't surprise me how his rabid fans treated you. From all...
Dang. Yeah that’s super hip.
I really enjoy these sounds and I’ve heard him talk before about similar things with triads, like chaining together arpeggios (maybe over a C, you could play an E...

Sort of. If a single chord becomes a chord pattern, then the question becomes what types of chord patterns work well in that harmonic context. The avoid note of the original chord now is not heard...
