I love this tune. I used to accompany a friend on clarinet on it before he passed away. The Duke Robillard version that the OP links to is really nice.
Here’s my attempt on solo guitar. I’ve been doing a lot more gardening than practicing lately, so it’s rough. I’ll try to work on finger mechanics and clean it up.
It's been awhile since i last logged in here, but there's a strange synchronicity in that i was just playing
'If I Had You' a couple of days ago, and here it is as this month's standard...
and so, off to the shed i will head, since there are still a few days left in the month!!!
In any case, here's a quick 'baseline' recording, playing the melody and changes from memory, and

Hopefully it will get a little better...

This reveals another gap in my knowledge. How are chord patterns crafted?
I know about a few devices:
1. different inversions
2. harmonized scales
3. tritone subs
4. sequences I've heard...
The sheets of sound comparison makes sense, he's hugely into Coltrane. But more so the harmonic stuff, rhythmically he's often pretty locked into 8th notes. But that's part of what makes his...

Holy Moley! That's a fascinating story, and it all checks out in the book about him I'm reading. He was treated as God in DC, so it doesn't surprise me how his rabid fans treated you. From all...
Dang. Yeah that’s super hip.
I really enjoy these sounds and I’ve heard him talk before about similar things with triads, like chaining together arpeggios (maybe over a C, you could play an E...

Sort of. If a single chord becomes a chord pattern, then the question becomes what types of chord patterns work well in that harmonic context. The avoid note of the original chord now is not heard...
Even the heaviest baritone sets (eg 16-70) generally seem to come with a plain 2nd string (tuned to F# or E ?) of max. 22 gauge, the exception being some Newtones, apparently (22w). But the 2nd...
So, the idea is that the chart says, say Cmaj7, but somebody is going to play Cmaj7, A7, D7 (or is it Dm7), G7. So, the avoid note in C is an F, which occurs in the G7. Since the F is contained...
Joe Pass was a fan of Danny Gatton, I hadn't heard of him before he mentioned him (right after Gatton's first album was released).
