I wonder if that's where Brownie got his ideas for playing off of fast moving chains of Dom7th chords moving in fourths, like in Jordu?

You can hear a lot of Fats Navarro in Clifford. A very under appreciated player.

Absolutely. Their connection is at once Nostalgic and comes Out of nowhere at the same time. Fats had such a melodic lyrical sense and deep swing that gave way to Clifford and then people like Tom Harrell, Blue Mitchell and Teramaso Hino. So much to learn about phrasing from knowing that entire family of trumpet players.

Brownie also wrote great tunes with a kind of Bach logic.
    Jordu
    Joyspring
    Dahouud
    Sandu

I studied with a classical trumpet player who thought Brownie was the greatest jazz trumpet player of all time. And he died at the age of 25!
