You should stick around until somebody hits a working definition.

the formal statement of the meaning or significance of a word, phrase, idiom, etc., as found in dictionaries.

word, phrase, idiom, word, phrase, idiom, word, phrase, idiom, word, phrase, idiom, word, phrase, idiom,

Definitions are all about words. All "working" definitions are still only about the word. Not the thing itself.

The word "music" has already packed in so with so much... stuff. It has all kinds of meanings. So many.
What is music? - it's just a question. Why even bother with a definition? You can spend a book's worth of words doing it, and it'll still be just an opinion.

IMHO - it is a very cool situation

In music and all the arts, the social context thing Christian brought up is pretty important. You don't put on a cowboy outfit to go hear opera at the Met. I mean...you can, but it's generally not done. Audiences like to feel they're part of a club. The in-crowd for example. They like to hear music that supports the self-image they'd like to project. Social context.

The ballad thing: Some folks are just not all that into ballads so they don't work on it. If you don't enjoy ballads you're not going to be able to do it well. We tend to play music we like. The only possible reason to do otherwise would be to prove something to a bunch of old guys on some forum, or maybe to get a gig :-)

    Good point actually...

I think a 'working' definition is useful here on this forum and so far most have danced around it...IMHO.

Music is one of the few times that man CREATES...and since we are creating something here ( good or bad ) we ought to have some idea of what that is.

Car - it has some wheels. engine. designed to carry stuff or people from a to b. moves on steady terrain... mostly. Can't narrow it down much more because cars do all sorts of things.
That definition is kinda enough but then a Mars rover is a car. And the forklift also. Forklift is not a car. Train is not a car. But it has cars.

Now, if defining "car" is hard, why even bother defining "music"?

Ah, now there's a question. It's not surfboarding when out of your head on meth... OR IS IT?

    No, not difficult.

A car is nothing more then the sum of its parts.

But music is not. What is there then that is more than sound alone?
