In May 2008 Bucky Pizzarelli came to Toronto to play at the Heliconian Club. After the gig he kindly agreed to give me a lesson the following morning at his hotel. Here's the first 15 minutes or so. The guitar is a mid-1940's L50 which we traded back and forth during the lesson. In this part we were working on straight acoustic rhythm. His message (repeated often): "Lighten up!"
I wanted to share this as a tribute to the memory of this charming and generous guitarist. Please ignore my flubs!
A belated thanks for this gem you shared with us. Bucky comes across as such a friendly and warm person, in addition to being the master we all know he was. You were lucky to have this opportunity of meeting him!
I know we all hear things differently, but considering that's a strat that is definitely "warm and round." Maybe what you are looking for is more like Wes Montgomery? "Jazz mud". Altho Wes isn't...
I love Rahsaan. Great music with a lot of humor. I just read that his performance on the Ed Sullivan Show was supposed to be a mellow cover of a Stevie Wonder song and then that - live for millions...
Believe it or not, I got pretty damn closed with my standard Tele (no HBs) through a Korg G3 multifx and a Musicman 65RP! I was Paul Kossoff! That was 30 years ago. Now I use an LP std but I don't...
I’m all for portability and ease of set-up. Lately I’ve been obsessing over the concept of guitar straight to amp (no pedals) but that is another story. But often I think to myself are we making a...
Regarding the OP and the Gambale (not baritone) tuning, I guess you could just discard the bottom (E) string and move strings 5-2 (A-B) down one place, as already suggested. That's going to give you...
I have the same in the neck position of my '88 Am. Std. Tele. The original fender was microphonic. At the time (around '96) I got it for country. It's a great pickup. The original bridge pickup is...
Even better then a 58…..
If needed I will drape this (see below) in front of my amp and plug into the PA. Even in some smaller rooms I will do this but keep the channel on the PA low. Can make...
OP - what do you mean by jazz harmony? Further context needed…
That said I probably wouldn’t be much help anyway because I didn’t really learn ‘jazz harmony’ from a book. I’m not sure there are...
Is the hole in the side to accept a T bar? if so, should it be at the other end?
Also is the bore of the tube big enough to fit over the switch and threaded part?
The bore looks small relative to...
I was brought up old school on Vincent Persichetti's Twentieth Century Harmony which gave me a foundation beyond the traditional boundries of jazz and gave me fluency in language that is untapped in...
I just learned about the moises app from the playing-with-recordings thread. I used it to split apart some steely dan and earth, wind & fire. It’s been a really cool experience over the last couple...
With a totally stellar lineup, his solo at Mingus's Carnage hall concert stands out.
He'd tour the college circuits and his concerts always featured a Q&A from the stage during intermission. His...
