I just wander. When you are doing those, how aware are you about the recording setup. Does it bother you or you don't care?
-
Mark has posted his recording setup previously. My assumption is that he's still using the same. He sounds much better recorded than 90+% of folks on Youtube doing their own stuff.

Thanks for asking. If you’re talking about red light fever I’ve gotten over that completely by repeating the recording process hundreds of times in the comforts of my home studio. Everything is in place pre-setup so it’s just hitting the power buttons and go. I don’t have to think about it at all, lighting, green screens, 4 cameras, 4 audio tracks are all set and forget. Remote controls are a big help too.
-
Maybe we should all do breathing exercises more than thinking about recording setups?
EDIT: At least for me it would not hurt to integrate that more into daily life.

Just asked because when I push "record" it switches something "off" in my brain.
But you seem completely unbothered

I hear you and understand. That’s the red light fever I’m referring to; when the red recording light goes on we can freeze up; it’s a form of performance anxiety. I’ve managed to turn it around where the record light is like my audience and I step up the energy to deliver for the tape. When recording, my playing is more purposeful and there is underlying intent to communicate a story. It took years to get here where it feel is this way; and really came together during the pandemic.

I started zoom lessons a couple weeks ago and I was so much more anxious than something in person. I blanked on the simplest things

One of the points of music, after all, is to communicate with others. When I read interviews with people whom I consider master musicians, one of the things they frequently talk about, is the importance of communicating and connecting with the audience. I have always found myself inhibited in that regard and I still feel tight and anxious when someone is listening. Of course, there are hardly any jazz gigs around here to play, anyway, so it might be a moot point. However, I should try setting up a recording rig at home and playing into that; maybe it'll help me get over it.
