    Definitely what I remember learning in school, but re: rock and roll. There the boundaries can be really blurry in the early songs with their recognisable (usually?) 12-bar blues schemes. I'm never certain about the relationship between R&R and Rock (let alone R&B ).

    The blues is a common ancestor of jazz and rock.

    The thing with genre is that it only exists as an idea. I think people are always more dynamic then any system or structure. Also when does something become so different as to warrant a new name? In reality things are always messy.
