For me, the ergonomics of the instrument is paramount. First, do I like the size, shape and feel of the neck? Second, is the body comfortable to hold? Does it balance properly? These are all things you can't easily change.
Next, does it sustain the way I want it to? Archtops and solid bodies sustain differently. This is asking, will this guitar make *my* music?
Next, does the high end ring out clearly and with a full sound, or is it tinny? You'd think this would be a matter of setup, but that hasn't been my experience.
Then, you get to sound. That's complicated too, because there are some characteristics of sound that are pretty easy to change and others that aren't.
A complicating factor is that, no matter how you feel about these issues, your feelings are subject to change over time as you grow as a player.
So, I never know how to advise somebody on what guitar to get. How can I know what will feel right in somebody else's hand?
My best advice is to get a 30 day return privilege.
I could add this. Certain brands are consistently of good quality. I don't have experience with many of them, but I have experience with several Yamaha products and I think all of them were good value. I often gigged (pre covid) with the cheapest electric guitar Yamaha makes, the Pacific 012 Strat type (mine has replacement tuners and a Lil 59 at the neck). Playability is excellent for those that like the feel and sound is fair to good. I have a Yamaha acoustic, an electric piano and an amp, all of good quality.

Good suggestion, but 2 different animals, both in tone, and neck/body feel etc... Cheers, Arnie..
I thought they were but haven't kept up. Was thinking $4.5K and $6K are a lot for a laminate and the price, in addition to the requisite marketing, is propelled by the cost of doing business in the...
I tried those strings and thought they were awful.Hex core made them too stiff feeling.
My Sakura 175 copy has the post and no bracing. Actually it looks pretty shoddy and with the fake humbuckers! I don't believe the post is a repair for a sunken top, I think it's instead of bracing...
The sound post wouldn't have been a deal breaker, the lack of bracing is. Seller was a really nice guy however so shame to have to have let him down.
The arch top is stiffer than a flat top, and the f-holes allow it to move in a piston-like way. The bracing adds to this motion. This is nest for the mids. It affects violins and mandolins, as well....
I'd like to know the opposite. How to make flatwound strings sound like roundwounds. As it is, I just use roundwounds and get on with life.

Gotta laugh at the Paul Gilbert reference. Since I started this thread a little while ago I did experiment with changing the angle of the pick to the strings. I'd have to have my guitar up pretty...
Bone actually conducts sound much better than wood. That's the main reason why bone is used on flat-tops. Whether the sound is better is a subjective opinion. I believe it depends on the guitar. ...
Hi Alan, Thanks for your response. That's my understanding as well. I just thought it was interesting that F6o amounts to using the harmonized D natural minor scale over Dmin7 which implies a...
Hmmm... now that I've learned to edge pick I LOVE it, particularly the way that the pick does not catch on the strings nearly as much. I would suggest experimenting with pick grip and angle a bit...
I noticed a huge difference with bone. The tone you're hearing could absolutely be caused by the saddle. I don't recommend bone. It conducts extremely poorly and makes the sound worse imo.
