After buying my Jose Gonzalez Lopez flamenco negra last year, I have become really smitten by the whole Granada school of classical and flamenco guitars mostly built after the design and with the mentorship of Antonio Marin. Mijail Kharash is one of the more recent guitarristas to establish a following in Granada. In addition to the characteristic combination of punch and balance Granada’s guitars are known for,, Kharash brings an eye for the aesthetics of the region that is captivating to me.

Mijail is in the process of building a cedar/Indian rosewood classical for me, with an estimated completion in mid-June. Here are some pictures of the work in progress and a photo from GSI showing a similar guitar with the same rosette and purfling. Lastly, here’s a video demonstrating the sound of the GSI guitar, which has ziricote back and sides:

Note the Brazilian rosewood head stock cap in the last pic. The guitar will also have a matching Brazilian rosewood bridge.

Congrats on your anticipated NGD! The ziricote back on that one at GSI was stunning, wow. I've sat in that very chair and played (but not like the artist in that video, Garrett Podgorski, hehe). I also like the dominant chord in the final cadence of that Tarrega study. Thanks for the post.

That GSI guitar is pretty stunning, but the ziricote is a bit too much bling for my taste. I’d love to visit that room some day and get up close & personal with their always amazing inventory of instruments.

Here’s a great issue of Orfeo magazine that features some of the Granada masters:

Love the picture of the top being carved. Planer and caliber. Textbook.

I believe he uses mostly all hand tools. Today, I went to visit my mother and noticed this door on one of her cabinets. I sent the pic to Mijail and he is going to incorporate the design into the sound port:

The latest pics from Mijail Kharash. It is beginning to to seem like a real guitar now, not just an abstract idea. While I can’t wait to receive it, I am also really enjoying the process. The sound port will be a unique feature. Mijail wanted to do something more “elegant” than a simple oval soundport. This design reminded him of a pattern in a “confessional door in a Catholic church”. It’s so unique and beautiful and, again demonstrates Mijail’s artistry. The fact that I could just pay my deposit and have him start in right away on the build is just astounding, but a great opportunity for me. I predict that within 2 years he will have a waiting list. And, I’m on a mission to see that it happens!
