There are sunburst ES-390 P-90 versions out there. They just have black painted necks and the backs of their headstocks are also painted black. The neck profile may also be on the slim side, but someone else would need to verify that. The mini hums have adjustable pole pieces so you can dial them around. If I wanted to get really crazy with tone tweaking though, I would probably have Lindy Fralin help me with a special wind. Maybe at some future date. I have 11 guitars within arms reach. I don't need to get any more fanatical at the moment.

the current epi casino coupe is along the lines of the gibby 390...smaller body, hollow except for small block under bridge, and p-90's
cheers

Just my personal preference. My first "really good" guitar was an ES-335. I was young and skinny (and handsome ). Now, even with my increased girth, every time I pick up a 335 style guitar (mine is currently a cheap knockoff) I feel like I have "come home"! Any smaller body just doesn't feel right.

Every time you guys post about such-and-such guitar I get a bad GAS attack for the same.
335 vs 339?
It’s like “Ginger vs MaryAnne”...(RIP)

Mine is a 339 size whereas dad has a 335. I don't think there's much of a sound difference. Mine is comfortable and I love it, but there is some mojo with a 335... I'll concede that it is the "cooler" guitar.

I've owned both an ES-339 and a Tokai 335. The comfort issue depends very much upon your size. I am short and found that to play the 335 I had hunch my shoulder up to get my arm over the lower bout. It became pretty uncomfortable after playing for an hour or so. You wouldn't have that problem if you were taller. The 339 is more comfortable to play and overcame that problem, but it is still a semi. It's not like a Strat or Tele or even a LP that you can tuck into your body for the ultimate comfort when playing.
Regarding the sound difference, they are similar but the 335 has a much fuller, richer tone. I didn't like the Memphis Tone Circuit on the 339 which seemed to make it very hard to roll off the high end and get the kind of jazz sound I was looking for. It was always too thin and bright for my taste. I never had that problem with the Tokai 335.
I found the ideal jazz guitar for myself in the Ibanez GB10. It's a small bodied archtop that's as comfortable to play as the ES-339, has a terrific sound in the style of the ES-335 but even fuller and warmer, and has a much better neck than either of them. Of course, it's designed for jazz and is not as versatile as the Gibsons.

I played an ES 335 and an ES 339 back to back on the weekend. To me, they didn't sound alike. ES 339 sounded darker with less mids, ES 335 was a bright guitar with the pronounced mids typical of the model.

I have a Custom shop 339 and 356 as well as a 335 . The 7/8 body of the 339/356 is more comfortable to play, I can easily get any tone I want out of all of them . I love my 335 , and the Heritage H535 as well . If I had to choose only one .. it would be the 339

I bought a brand new 335 right before the Pandemic hit. Satin finish, 57 classics. Wonderful instrument. I was able to set it up nicely and it played like butter with 11s. I loved the sound and it was very comfortable. Sold the 335 to fund my first 7 string. My reasoning was that 335s are ubiquitous and being that I already had a Johnny A, the 335 went.
Last Spring I decided to get another 335, because I missed the one I had. Ordered the same style. The new one was a piece of junk. Heaviest guitar I’ve ever held. The string slot on the G string was cut way too low, and the finish was horrible. Could not dial in a pleasing tone for jazz from the T-type pups. Went right back to the store. The folks at the store couldn’t believe how heavy it was either.
I now have a CS 336 that has 57 Classics. Same size as a 339, but constructed differently. Shares some construction characteristics with a Johnny A, but has a center block which is the same piece of wood as the back and sides. Very, very comfortable neck, finished flawlessly and has the tone I was looking for.
