Yeah remember looking at Thomann and seening stuff like the Tal Farlow's or the Lee Ritenour's at around €4200-4500 some 8-10 years ago and thinking meh

These days there is practically nothing on offer and it's expensive as hell .. Should have picked up that Tal

I suppose their focus is on Les Pauls and other higher margin instruments. I’d expect a crimson level archtop to take more time to build than a solid body, thus likely at a higher cost price. When you consider what they are shifting today at high price brackets in that group of instruments, I can see how they might favour those instead.

Is the crimson shop still operating? I can see L-5s for sale at Thomann but all look to be on an order basis?

I think it's mostly operating on a order basis these days.

Rumor has it that Tal showed the filter of a viceroy cigarette to Gibson for the color he wanted.

    That's a cool story.

Whether it's true or not, Viceroy brown has got to be one of the most attractive finishes on any guitar on the planet.

Gibson should hire you to photograph all their archtops, Vinny. You've got a great Eye, there.

Agree 100% Dick ! In fact you are a major reason I love the TF model so much.
Trust me I am trolling the waters. Your sound is my sound my friend.

As well as the other ones are a bit worn. Clearly, it's gotten a lot of love and play time!

The modern Viceroy Brown color is very sensitive to light and camera flash when taking picture and very often doesn't reflect the real color.
Its a bit lighter than the original color, as it tends to vary from Ice Tea Burst to Caramel burst even if in picture it tends to look more orange.
Here is the original color of the prototype before it faded to natural:
