Just came across the guitar from a buddy out of state. Has no idea what it is. Looks like a Hangstrom Viking, but headstock and f-holes,etc aren't correct. Japanese knockoff?

Its no viking for sure.my late friend had one and its nothing like this . Im assuming a mij teiasko or something along that line

that whammy/tailpiece shows up on many 60's era japanese guitars...many aria's...
headstock looks similar to japanese teisco or sekova

eastwood actually made a repro of it a few years ago...sans the vintage parts of course!
it gained in popularity due to dan auerbach of the black keys using one
the pups while looking like typical humbuckers are valco/supro single coils (great pups)

Great job of figuring out the guitar. Valco guitars are generally quite good. Every one that I have played was a winner.
