I am currently in Southwest Florida and trying to figure out the safest way to get back home to Canada. The weather is nice here, but I’m not enjoying myself at all, with all this fear and uncertainty. My wife and I are basically staying at home (drinking our wine) and minimizing our contact with other people. I keep searching around on the web for something to take my mind off all of the bad news, but I run out of things to read and view. I think we could all benefit from looking at beautiful guitars. How about we all share pictures of some beautiful archtops to take our minds off all the negative things going on. I’ll start. This beautiful natural 1950’s D’Angelico Excel belongs to my brother.

Here in Switzerland things are getting also very unpleasant these days but it definitely helps to take a guitar out into the sunny garden, noodle around, and work on some concepts/ideas/tunes which have been on the list for a while (of course all in the shade of a huge umbrella). It would probably better not be a supreme beauty of high value as your brother's Excel, actually anything that sounds decent will do. The Last couple of days i did so with my 1998 Guild AAA and discovered again how nice an instrument this is, with a distinct voice which is quite unique compared to my other guitars. This 1970 AAA is not mine, i would not be able to take a picture which exposes these beautiful curves as nicely ......

Nice, I remember that one HFC, a beautiful Excel w the transitional tailpiece John D. was using on his NYers prior to and maybe concurrent w the iconic stairstep design in the late 30s, seen it on some "special" designated DAs but that's the only Excel I've seen w it....

thanks. I wonder if that tailpiece was added at a later date. It was originally bought by Leo DiBranga who also bought a New Yorker later on. I know that there are a few frets that were replaced and there may have been some overspray which makes me think that John D. may have replaced the tailpiece with the early New Yorker one. I personally don't care if it's been modified since it's what I was able to afford at the time and it sounds great. I just wish I had bought a D'Angelico a lot earlier when the were about $3,000 to $5,000 clams.

Here in Finland a de facto curfew was yesterday imposed for people over 70. For the first time in my life I feel old. But I interpret the car and my one-man workshop, a.k.a. TOOB World Headquarters, as extensions to the safe cocoon. For once, it's OK to be asocial and concentrate on tinkering. Maybe one day I'll even learn to play... My thoughts are with all the pro musicians and other freelance performers, some on the fringe of hand-to-mouth existence as a rule, who have just lost their main or only source of income. The issue is global but measures of solidarity have to be local. Any ideas/initiatives out there?

Yes, it truly is tedious to be partly isolated because of the Corona virus. I suffer from chronic lymphatic leucemia which in itself is not particularly burdensome or life threatening but it weakens my immune defence, so I have to take special care in these times. I hope that all of you take good care too so you don't accidently spread the virus. The experiences so far from various countries seems to show that good precautions can slow down the spread of the virus - hopefully so it will gradually dye out in not too long time but at least so our health systems can keep up with the number of patients at any given time.

I have posted pictures of this guitar before, but it's a couple of years ago, so I hope it will pass. It's a paraphrase of a Stromberg Master 400 made by Jim Triggs.

This was an astounding sight to behold. On my Moms birthday last August I’m sitting on my porch deep in prayer. When I look up these two majestic fellows are standing there. About 60 feet from me. I s as I’d wow maybe just a little too loudly and they walked away. Young ones, still had the mossy covering on by their antlers

Because the OP wanted some input from the rest of us and suggested it. Nothing wrong with enjoying the art of the instrument.

This going to sound stupid but I love great archtop guitar photos. What I really do not like is that some call it guitar porn and I think they don't give it a second thought. To me though I really dislike that connotation for looking at nice guitars. One might tell me to relax a but but frankly it has done a huge disservice to society the whole pornography industry. It has broken up families an relationships, and take money out of folks pockets for things they really need. it is really a big addiction.

    Ok off my soapbox.

    Big...

Hows about a pan of my GF's Scungilli / Calimari sauce... Her being Sicilian makes it as authentic as it can be.

We're together nearly four years and it's like being in mom's kitchen... adding pounds to my waistline! Mangia :-)

I need something to make me feel good and forget about the pandemic!-scungilli_calimari-jpg

It reminds me of a story...

There was this Italian "Ristorante" near where I lived up north. It had just a red awning in front saying "Ristorante" and the windows were painted black (for privacy from the street) half way up, red curtains inside.

I walked in there with my little cousin (a Monefusco) and a guy in a black suit walks over and says, "What can I do for you Mr..." Requiring I give him my last name... Napolitano and introduced my cousin by her surname.

I said dinner for myself and little (just turned 21) cousin and I. We sat and I asked for menus... to which he said, "We hava no menu... whatta you wanna eat, we can maka anything you want"

There were several guys in suits at the back table playing cards who glanced our way and as the waiter chatted and went back to their game.

My cousin Dianne and I just looked at each other and I asked if they could make Scungilli and Calimari over linguini as I had not had it in years since my mom moved away. Dianne ordered something much simpler. Dinner was served, wine was drunk, and the bill was something like $125 quite a bill for 1975.

Anyway I'm pretty certain we would not have been given a table if my last name were Jones or some other Euro name.

At any rate, my GF cooks justa lika my momma and grandma. Such a find.
