Rather than a hipster thing, I think a Wandre is a peek into the mind of a creative artist of his time (1950s-60s): Antonio Vandre Pioli. The guitar was just another of his expressive mediums. It looks like it'd be cumbersome to play without a strap.
That said, it looks REALLY cool as a piece of art or as a guitar. I bet Ornette would love for his guitarist to play that Wandre, just from a visual standpoint.
I wonder how it sounds...
