2-1/2 years ago I visited Patrick Amato at his house. After I played couple of his guitars, he began to tell me about his relationship with Vinnie Corrao. Vinnie was his guitar teacher. Vinnie was also my fathers best friend when he was just a boy. Patrick always raved about Vinnies playing, and rightfully so. Patrick pulled out a CD recorded by Vinnie. On it was a few tunes played with his band. But Patrick singled out "Lush Life". We listened to it. Patrick told me that was his favorite song. He asked me to learn it for him one day. I promised I would.
Here you go Patrick. I hope you hear this. Your legacy here still lives on for 2 years after your passing. We miss you. I did this for you..
This is the Joe Pass version. Recorded with Mic and Zoom G3 into separate channels. Mixed using my USB Mixer.

Just beautiful, Joe. I'm sure PA and JP are smiling, sipping espresso and puffing on Cohibas, listening to you playing, and swapping stories. Well done!
-
this is why i love this place!!!
great story.. great homage...great playing!
bravo joe D!! (as always)
cheers
-
Wow. A Joe Pass tune, played on a Johnny Smith guitar, in honor or Patrick... there's almost too much there to even absorb!
Stunning.
-
Just beautiful, Joe.
I feel the emotion of the homage and at the same time the magic of the moment.
Eternity is Today.
-
Joe- fantastic playing! I love the emotion you put into your playing - always heartfelt .
A tremendous gift for Patrick - I'm sure he is smiling down on you .
Thanks for sharing this - very special
-
Couldn't think of a nicer tribute. He would have loved that, man. Lovely playing!

Brother Joe, seriously good stuff....and thanks for sharing. But this brings up a musician joke that I have to share:
A bandleader has a highly paid New Years Eve casual and the night before the gig, his main reeds player calls in sick. The bandleader calls around and everyone is booked. Finally he talks to his keyboard player who says he has the number of a reeds player, but he has never played with him and cannot vouch for his skills. The bandleader, being desperate takes the number.
The unknown reeds player is called and amazingly is available and the bandleader hires him. The reeds player shows up to the gig and tells the bandleader "I am a pretty good player, thanks for hiring me, but I do want to tell you that I only know how to play two songs"
The bandleader yells :TWO FRICKEN SONGS! ARE YOU KIDDING ME? WHAT ARE THEY?
The reeds player replies "Lush Life in any key and Happy Birthday in F"

Joe, very nice, great playing!
PS: I love the way these mid seventies JS sound and your clip makes me wonder if i'd better replace the frets on mine too ....
-
Joe,
Very well played my friend, not an easy tune to conquer but executed
with great panache. Patrick will be pleased that you kept your promise.
-
Great playing and that Gibson JS sounds great! Thanks!
-
Great as always
i woke up this morning and this is the first thing I played, now I will be humming all day !

When I am playing, I look down at the perfectly polished gold fret ends and I actually see them as an cosmetic upgrade as well as a functional necessity.
Replace them!
Thanks guys!

Joe - as it happens, I was on a site last night and someone posted a clip from Casablanca. At the end of the clip, the screen filled up with various other clips from one of the finest films ever made - with one exception. There in the upper right hand corner, amongst the clips of Ric and Ilsa and the rest of the first-rate cast, there was Joe DeNisco playing Lush Life on his Johnny Smith. I thought it was appropriate.

Joe,
My favorite chart. Exceptional playing, man. And, the Johnny Smith sounds beautiful. Superb.
-
Joe, that is beautiful, brother. You are a fantastic player and awesome human being! Made my day a rich experience. Thank you!! I thought you were pretty talented before, but that puts it into a whole different level. Very cool.
-
I can feel Patrick's giant grin shining down from Heaven. Bro seriously that is by far the best video you have ever done. Flawless bro. I can hear the words of Joe Pass saying "Hey that guy can play ! "
I forgot how beautiful that song is. WOW bro that was a masterpiece. I watched it 5 times. This one blew me away.
-
Joe,
As you might expect you got Two Thumbs up
from June, a rare event, doubly difficult after
the stroke. The verdict .,,a masterly performance,
and I wholeheartedly agree.
Keep up the good work JS & JP are watching.

Very nice Joe. The playing, and the timing of your releasing the video. Thank you for keeping your word to Patrick. And for letting us be a part of it.
-
AG,
After learning that song, I am ashamed to admit, learning the rest of Giant Steps is officially off the table. Sorry bro.
Thanks for posting. I miss our offline talks. You are a classy knowledgeable guy.

I know what you mean about some tunes doing a memory wipe.
I'm learning a bunch of Jimmy Raney solos, and every time I learn a new one, the old one seems to evaporate. I am trying to review and re-learn the old ones.
I worry that maybe it's just me getting old!
-
Bro....this was your pinnacle recording. It's going to be a tough act to follow. YouTube has just been blessed.

Patrick was quite a guy. I was supposed to spend the day with him, the day he passed away. But he asked me to meet him at Ronaldo's shop early in the morning instead of the time we planned which was around 1pm. We were taking Ronaldo out for a nice lunch and I was dropping off BooBoo. But a couple of days before, Ronaldo told Patrick that "Pete" "a Frampton" was picking up a guitar at the shop early in the morning. So the night before Patrick changed the time to the morning. I told him I couldn't make it in the morning (I had to work..).
the rest is history..

just to clarify..was in no way critiquing your beautiful performance...just assuring v, as you said...always room for improvement!! (thankfully!)...on every level, and for us all...takes hard but loving work...but always possible.
the more you love the instrument, and the music, the more you want to keep striving ...

One of my favourite songs and played so beautifully. Thank you Joe.

Also the volume is pretty low in this recording. But it really does capture the sound of the Johnny Smith guitar quite well. I had the Mic about 2 foot away and I had the gain turned up a lot. I did this to eliminate the boominess and to lessen the sound of my fingers and pick hitting my pickguard.

Joe, I sat listening, all the time mesmerized by your gifted playing!
Thank you bro, Mr. P would have so enjoyed your recording too...Cigars all around on that one!

I agree--Pass would have approved.

It hasn't been the same without Patrick. In some ways good and in someways bad. He was an interesting dude who knew his stuff about guitars. When you went upstairs to the green striped room, he had at least 20 guitar standsin front of his desk, each one with a special guitar on it. He loved being surrounded with guitars. It was awesome.
thanks guys, I appreciate it.

I think Patrick made a good choice.

Great point Lawson.
Thats how I feel about it too.
Right now, I'm not in a position to surround myself with guitars but I will in due time. I got 3 on my radar. An L5 is definite.
ENJOY!!!

Gibson should offer that sunburst on all Archtop models. Blows away VSB.

But as I've said in the past, it takes me a couple of days to conform from my GJS to my Tal, and they are kind of similar. After playing my GJS for 2 weeks straight I tried my 165 last night and my playing was no where near what I thought was acceptable. The strings were in the wrong place, the guitar didn't sit in the groove like it was for the 2 weeks prior. Too many guitars can be a burden to the player who demands precision in their playing. When I get my next L5, it will allow me to bounce back and forth between it and my Tal with less of an adjustment period.. And I will bond into it. The iconic L5 is iconic for a reason.. I aim to discover those reasons.

Same song, played on my Gibson Es165 Herb Ellis. I much prefer the sound of an electric guitar over an acoustic recording any day.
I think one of the greatest inventions was the pickup. Gibson makes some good ones. I should recorded this on the Johnny, the The Es165 was all I had with me when I recorded this.
-
Joe,
The Es165 has great projection, you have surpassed yourself
the guitar has such a clean, clear, sound. You don't let the
grass grow underfoot. Another superb performance may I
be the first to congratulate you, very well done indeed. A
very nice start to the day, its 8.30am here.

1:30 am here. I like the 165 tone better. More Joe Pass like sounding. I like the darker tone. That's just my ears though. Of course both versions absolutely stellar. That 165 is a keeper for sure.
I prefer a electric acoustic sound more than a acoustic electric sound. Really nice bro.
I have listened to all your video's and the laminates always seem to record better sound wise. I thought the recorded tone of the solid formed sounded awesome too with the Tal sounding the best.
Looking forward to when the L5 is in your nest. Funny how plywood can sound better at times.
You just keep getting better and better bro......my man !
-
Joe - your tone is fittingly "lush" and "lively" - fine, fine, fine!

I just had a chance to listen to this and you did a great job. Sounds really nice. Thanks for sharing it here.
