I'd like to start a new anti-gear thread. Videos of guitar players sounding great on affordable instruments (i.e. sub $1000). Doesn't necessarily need to be their main instrument.

But in these two cases, it is.

    Aria Pro Jazz Guitar

1980's Fender Bullet (so I'm told)

That Dave Cliff vid is amazing! Never heard of him before. Looks like a Tele neck on a Stratish body. Amazing chops with no use of the pinky for the solo, fun player to watch and listen to!! Off to find more, thanks for posting!!

I wonder what Lorne was thinking when he got the call? "...hmmm, a gig with Oscar Peterson. I know, I'll bring my Ibanez Roadstar!"

You too could play like Birelli...

Actually when I saw him play a couple of weeks back it seemed like he was having trouble with his jack input, but we weren't sure if this was part of the show. He certainly made a joke out of it.

Ah, glad you liked him - South London's finest, and my first ever jazz guitar lesson was with him many moons ago...

If I get my way all on this forum will know of Dave Cliff.

Re: Pinky. TBH I think it's more hinderance than help to be honest. Unless you are Pasquale Spiderfingers Grasso and can play the entire works of Bach on the guitar with one hand tied behind your back or somethin.

I actually don't know but there's a story behind it:

A friend of Jack's asked him for a favour: to go to a guitar store and pick an inexpensive but proper beginner's guitar for his daughter. Knowing that the Squier line is basically of at least decent quality he checked some Squiers and happened on the one he's playing there and bought it for himself because he liked it right from the start: great playability and good sound. Goes to show that the stars align for cheapo guitars, too.

Yep, the s/b guitar in the first vid is his sunday best Aria. The usual one is natural. Sounds the same..

Oh sure. I tried two Ibanez AF 85's the day I bought one - identical finish, moel etc - the second one just wasn't the same. At all.

OTOH, sometimes the stars really don't align for expensive guitars....

He was using a GK bass amp until it died. Now he plays through an AER compact 60. Sounds the same.

Thanks - I seemed to remember that I had the info from some interview video clip. Jack Pearson is a top notch player.
