Are we guitarists a very conservative lot, or is it an objective fact that Leo got it right the first time? I know that if I had a Fender Tweed (A bigger one for headroom, please), I'd be in heaven.

Keith Richards said Leo's genius was not just designing a Tele or the amp, but the marriage of the two. He made the amp for that guitar...they belong together.

There is something about a Tele through a Fender amp that feels...right.

Finally done except for action adjustment and cleaning up the bridge. I've got it tuned down to Db with 12-54 roundwounds. Running through my MB200 with Alpha 8" - sounds real good so far.

Sweet ax Skip. Are you going to post pics of how the controls turned out or did I miss that?

You have to start young, if you want to become a "Nashville Cat." Here's my one year-old grandson enjoying developing his right-hand technique on the Telecaster. He will be a jazz winds from a new direction hot picker before too long.

Lovely! That is how it has to go! The young man alrady shows skill in his focus and hand position.

Did you finish that Tele yourself? Is it an oil finish? I just received a nice unfinished tele body and want to go for a natural look similar to yours.

I didn't know that, tho after googling around it seems his had humbuckers and not P90s. Still I have high hopes for this one.

Anyways seller didn't back out, so I've brought it home. So far I'm really impressed and the nice surprise is, while it photographs as being white in reality the VOS finish is nicotine yellow which I much prefer .. I've never been fond of really white guitars

You know .... buying a new guitar really does bring happiness!

    Nice build Skip!

With the wooden bridge does it have the same twangy sound as a tele?

Does the second f hole make a difference in sound quality vs the single of say a thinline tele?

Can you comment on some of the design choices you made with this, say in what you were hoping to do with it and whether you think you achieved it?

Sorry folks, didn't mean to turn it into a build thread but I'm interested in doing a similar thing and hoping to learn from his success.

    Thanks

Sorry for the massive thread derail!
Interesting information – and useful for the Telecaster gang too...! Do You mean that the construction of the pu changed? How? Can You tell if there is a modern pu winder that would sound closest to those early ones?

I have Seymour Duncan Antiquities right now in my R6. When I lift them close to the strings they sound very sweet, complex and balanced.

    Super rare.

    Escort - Esquire?!?

I think they would be Italian made.

Do these qualify as the first Tele clone?

Note the scratch plate and pickup placement, did Leo rip it off for the ASAT Custom? Lol...

    Food for thought

I remember the Italian, Eko-made Vox guitars. In fact, I used to play my aunt's Eko acoustic all the time in the 60s. It sounded exactly like the record "Bus Stop" by the Hollies.

The "Escort" sure likes like a play on the "Esquire." If you can find one, it is probably a decent guitar.

You'd think Graham Nash could've afforded a real Tele by then. Good clip.

Also, here's a friends Blackguard that I got to babysit for a while next to my '54 LP:
What is the neck pickup on the left? Looks like a humbucker-sized wide range? (too small to be a "real" wide range)

A couple of G&L ASATs caught my eye. I heard a fellow play one in a big band setting. Preferred it to a Tele. Little less twang?

Yes. I went for the ASAT Special:

    1. Saddlelock bridge, not the traditional three barrel T-style bridge.
    2. MFD pickups instead of the "traditional AlNiCo", which are the most Tele-like that G&L offers.

And of course, your picking technique, EQing and amp make a big difference.

Has anyone played the new Elite Tele? Reviews? It looks pretty sweet... for the money, it should be...

I had an ASAT Classic the one made in the US. It's a lovely instrument, those pickups are amazing, only downside is the weight, mine was quite heavy, but if you order a custom made (actually all G&L are custom made) you can choose a semi hollow, with or without f holes.

Just found this beauty, I'm really gasing. It's a Suhr Model T Satin, kind of a Telecaster on steroids, lightweight, modern specs... It sounds brilliant from jazz to metal, very versatile guitar.

    Modern T Satin

Same specs with different shape, it sounds really good to me.

True. My ASAT Special is 4kg even (8.8lbs).
