Lyle Ritz has been a favourite of mine for many years.

Make sure you also check out Bill Tapia.

Cliff Edwards who recorded many pop and novelty songs also played quite a few jazz tunes.

If you would care for a musical sample, enjoy Travis Stine performing on this instrument.

For my 40th birthday, my best friend gave me this.
I would like to know if some of yours play the ukulele.
This is what I did today.

Ukes are great fun. I used to think of them as wannabe guitars, but they are their own thing.

Hum, the guitar is easier, you don't have a lot of choice on ukulele, well it depends of what you want to do with.

Believe it or not, I have written ten ukulele books published by Mel Bay. Here are three pages of my Mel Bay titles: http://www.melbay.com/Author/Default...AuthorId=37986

No bebop so far! But there are some Blues in the studies books, such as:

Check Jake Shimabukuro, Abe Lagrimas Jr, and some others if you want to hear jazz ukulele. Excellent stuff, all available through the magic of YouTube.

Cool. Campanella style fingering? What's that?

Lyle Ritz is great. He was an upright bass player and a member of the Wrecking Crew. And a great uke player.
I guess he liked 4 strings. I haven't played uke in a while but I've been heavily into it at times. I've got a
Kala tenor. Solid spruce top with lacewood back and sides. I had a MiSi pu installed and it sounds excellent.
I think the uke has great single note soloing potential.

In answer to Matt, campanella means little bells, and refers to playing scale passages across strings rather than along the string. This is something the ukulele, with its high-octave fourth string excels at. The notes overlap each other, almost harp-like. In my studies and arrangements, I try to not think guitar. The re-entrant tuning (the fourth string being higher than the third or second) really makes it a different instrument. That's why I don't use a low-octave G, as that would just make it a small four-string guitar. The high octave gives it a unique character.

Thanks Rob. I have heard people talk about playing chord melody on uke that way. Down strum if the melody is on the bottom string, upstroke if it's the top string ?

Yes, some do that, but I'm more of a fingerstyle player.

I'm happy to know there are a lot of ukulele players and serious ones.
    Thanks for posting nice things.
I knew there were a lot of who played pop songs with a great sound as a solo instrument but not a lot about this girl, Lyle Ritz.
I haven't played the ukulele for months and today I decided to draw the chords on a paper in order to organize what I wanted to play, it's a nice instrument.

Missed this, standard...re-entrant tuning is the heart and soul of uke.
