I stumbled upon one in local ads and it got my attention. Is anyone using it? I found some forum posts on the internet mentioning dead transformer and replacements, so it may have weak points. I was looking around for recordings using this amp and I've found one interesting:

That video was made six years ago by NY guitarist Greg Ruggiero. I've tried to talk him into joining the Forum, because nobody else has such an exhaustive knowledge of and experience with small amp heads. As far as I recall, Greg liked the sound but abandoned the amp because recurring reliability issues. A compulsive searcher, Greg's gone through dozens of amps since. I don't know which one(s) he uses now for his armada of Toob and Metro cabs, because there seems to be a different one in every photo. The last I saw was a Darkglass Microtubes 200W bass amp.
EDIT: Got hold of Greg. He likes the Microtubes 200, as well as the BluGuitar Amp 1 he's been using regularly for the past few months. So the 5 W amps are a thing of the past. Paradoxically, his current 6.5" Metro cab houses a cheap Chinese Pulse speaker rated for 15W only. Those pros know how to bend the rules.
EDITH EDITH: I'm meeting the Darkglass guys today. On my agenda: a plea for a 100-200W jazz amp head derived from the Microtubes 200, but with guitar-friendly eq shelves and an on-board reverb. The market for bass amps is small compared to guitar gear, so even a corner of the guitar amp market could be of interest for them.Last edited by Gitterbug; 10-10-2024 at 01:57 AM.
