What do you think about putting a P90 in the middle position of a Telecaster?

I have a vintage Gibson P90 that I love, but the guitar it is in is on its last legs. I have the option to restore it, or to put the pickup in my Telecaster, which is my main instrument anyway.

    Opinions?

Modding slab guitars is something everyone that plays a solidbody should do. Put all your fave things together. It’s a win/win/win.

personally I would put the p90 in the neck position. But that’s just me.

it will require routing the body, which, of course, you cannot undo.

There is no downside, except for this fact and potential resale considerations.

    go for it.

I was thinking about the middle position because I like the neck pup and because the P90 sounds great a little closer to the bridge. It’s 14 cm away from the bridge atm, it would be 12.5 cm away on the Tele.

It’s been done….probably a great way to make a tele even more versatile than it already is.

I agree with Martin. Neck position.

I had an old tele once and put a gold foil in the middle and a lollar p90 in the neck. Both sounded awesome. I only used the neck p90.

Then again, my tele now has two PAFs and I have literally never played the bridge pickup in front of other human beings.

Just out of curiosity, what is the original guitar that's now on its last leg? If it has a vintage Gibson P90, then it stands to reason that it could possibly be a vintage Gibson guitar, which may be worth restoring.

From my experience putting the same pickup in both a plank and an archtop, while there are certainly similarities, they don't sound the same.

    [Teles have a "middle" position?]

I love P-90s in teles, and as others have mentioned, a P-90 in the neck can sound wonderful!

Fender did it with the set neck Jim Adkins JA-90, a great thinline semi!

Putting a P90 on a Tele is like putting sneakers on a rooster ...

I'd drop it in the neck position too, but if you are interested in the middle, there's some photos in this thread you might find interesting.

My old 335 copy built by Framus/Warwick in the 80s and heavily worked on by an unskilled person (myself). Definitely no vintage value.

Is that a grounding wire that's been taped down?

Right, so I decided to have it done. It’ll take a few weeks. If anyone’s interested, I’ll let you know about the result.

The guitar tech suggested a five way switch with a push pull poti to activate the neck pick up along with the bridge pick up. Sounds sensible to me.

As others said, P90 in the neck is dog's bollocks. I would love that sound in my tele, but I can't live with the hum, I'm one of those weirdos. Noiseless maybe, but I'm not sure it's the same.
