Anyone ever try one of these? Might make a good speaker for a pedalboard preamp.

I tried it and returned it almost immediately. It was bigger than I realized and not nearly as quietly as I'd like.

I have a friend who goes from his FM9 into 2 of these for stereo, and he swears by that rig. He plays metal though, and I myself haven't heard it.

It's a great speaker! My dad uses one regularly and I also used it for a keyboard gig. Nice and clean, light, and loud.

I wish people these days wouldn't call a powered speaker a speaker!
To me a speaker is passive. For nearly 60 years I've been plugging my guitar into an amp and speaker.

The Headrush 108s get a lot of good reviews and have been ever since they were first released. There are also some interesting posts over on the Fractlal forum that show you how you can run an EQ in your modelers signal chain to make the 108's sound even better than stock by compensating for some of the slight unevenness in their FRFR response curve, they have graphs and explanations etc. The method is slick and could/should be used on any modelers FRFR system with just a little thought.

I will say, though, that the guys at the Fractal forum I talked to about powered speakers for FRFR rigs were really impressed, I mean really impressed with the Fender FR-10 and FR-12 powered FRFR speakers. That includes some experienced players over there who had expensive CLR FRFR speakers to compare them too, saying they would be quite happy using the FR-10 or FR-12 after directly comparing them to the much more expensive CLR's. That's a pretty resounding endorsement.
