Alpop, beutiful tone and nice playing, too. Sure should silence these who think the pickup is too bright.

    Thanks for the kind words.

I think the guitar sounds clear but not thin or brittle.

Some folks like to tinker with changing pickups as an interest/pastime/hobby and that's cool but not a prerequisite if you purchase this guitar IMO.

Nice sound which highlights just how good the stock set up can be. What amp did that go into, and did it seem like the recorded sound in the video was representative of what you heard in the room at the time?

The amp is a Quilter Aviator Cub. Here's the settings:

The New Ibanez Pat Metheny PM3C Model-img_2121-jpg

I mic'd the cab and sent it to a Focusrite Scarlett which went straight into an old IPhone SE.

The guitar volume was about 75% and the guitar tone was about 50%.

The interface input was turned up quite high as I'm in an apartment and I had to keep the room sound from being too loud.

I would say the room sound was pretty close to what came out on the video. The room sound might have been a bit bassier.

Thats very interesting. You got a real good tone out of it, but if you look at the settings, most would probably guess it would be a little on the bright side. But its not at all and just sounds good. Some of those other video must have had the treble cranked or something.

My guess is that maybe other demos were played with guitar volume and tone pots wide open. I almost always back off on both guitar controls to one degree or another.

I also played through that analog delay pedal and that softens/fattens things up as well.

Ah, good point. But you have proven its not that difficult or complicated to get a good tone out of the thing. Even something like all tone knobs straight up on the amp and dial back a little on the volume and tone knob on the guitar might work depending on the amp.

Wow. There is definitely a difference with the Manzer having a much richer low end compared to the Ibanez, but the latter did OK in the comparison. if the Manzer is a 17", that might explain some of that difference. Pickups are no doubt different, with the Manzer probably having a Lollar or Biltoft pick up in it. From Tim's NGD video, it seems likely that the Ibanez is unmodified. Of the two, I would rather play the Manzer but on the other hand, I couldn't afford one! For a few years I had a Biltoft floating CC on my 17" arch top; the sound was great, somewhere in between those two instruments- a little thinner than the Manzer but fatter and darker than the Ibanez. The noise, though, in my old house and places that we usually played, was too annoying.

From the Manzer site: "The Bluenote is a laminate back and top 16" archtop…Comes with a Kent Armstrong PAF in body pickup...Five ply maple/mahogany archtop and archback with solid curly maple sides. This laminate is handmade by me in very limited numbers."

Having played a few guitars with 'real' CC pickups, and having two guitars with floating variants made by Pete Biltoft, they all are intrinsically fairly bright sounding with the volume and tone wide open. That's actually why I like them.

The volume and tone controls can be used to great effect and allowing a very wide range of sounds from just one pickup.

If you're used to running your tone control wide open, a CC type pickup is probably going to sound a bit too bright.

Tim Lerch's Manzer is a custom 'Bluenote'. Could be the only things it has in common with Julian's for eg, is size, shape and appointments, including the hole in the head.

Description from her website, and then the video where you can see more of it.

"Playing a custom-made Bluenote (nicknamed “Honey”) with solid woods and a Charlie Christian pickup (made by Jason Lollar)"

Couple of things the Ibanez has going for it: 1)you can buy it now instead years from now, and B) you don't have to take a second mortgage on the house.

I think the Ibby sounds great in Tim's hands. I like the Manzer better, but it's an unfair comparison.
He's a lucky man to have 'Honey', and he deserves her for sure.

    Hi Arnie,

Excellent review of the PM3C and a gorgeous looking guitar.

Same as you, I've been thinking about filling the CC pickup in my lineup, but wasn't sure on which guitar. I was skeptical of PM3C overall tone and playability at that price, as well.

Maybe you have posted an update on new CC pickup and have missed it, regardless, what are your take on the PM3C with Pete Biltoft CC pickup...?

    Thanks,

Tim Lerch also has a good review. He also mentioned that the pickup "needs" some air between the strings and the top.

I wonder how those same two guitars would compare if those ceramic magnets in the stock ibanez were swapped out for whatever magnet is in his manzer. Maybe alnico 5s or 2s? Or maybe swap in one 5 and one 2. Seems like it make some kind of difference.

Absolutely. And I'm never above swapping out pickups in a guitar. The Ibanez maybe needing a better pickup is in no way a deal-breaker for me. I'd just call Pete Biltoft.

I now have a Biltoft CC pickup on mine with Alnico II magnets, and it's certainly an improvement. It's warmer, and thicker tone, however I sent the original to Kent Armstrong and he changed the ceramic magnets to Alnico V. In retrospect I probably should have done that first, before buying a pickup. I'm going to do a recording with Biltoft PU, and put back the original with the A II magnets and compare them.

    Cheers,
    Arnie...

This guitar looks very interesting to me, because I've been gassing for an ES-125 for years... but don't want to spend on a vintage one. Tried the Godin, the neck is too fat for me. Tried the Loar, is wasn't built great. This one is the right size, and has a CC instead of a P90, but it's price it good and I know Ibanez makes great instruments.

...I'm just not sure it'll scratch the itch for a sunburst P90 ES125...
