With an interested pianist, you can agree to try to create one clear comp out of two instruments. Easier on groove based music.

Probably easiest to try during a bass solo on a slower tune. One method: agree that one instrument takes the first part of each bar (or two bars) and the other takes the latter portion. Sparse is a lot easier than busy.

It makes sense to me...not that songs are "rules," but it's similar to the "how can you break the rules if you don't know what the rules are?" kind of thing.

And then there's the tunes that shouldn't be messed with. Some Billy Strayhorn tunes are like classical pieces to me.

Absolutely agree, Christian Miller! Understanding the roots and original intent of a piece can deepen appreciation. It's like knowing the language before writing poetry. And some tunes, like those from Billy Strayhorn, indeed deserve that classical reverence. ?? #MusicalWisdom
