It would be worth following the history of Sunny's song and its countless jazz versions.
Here we see the author Bobby Bebb with Ron Carter on bass guitar ... :

I think that anything can be done. It largely depends on how you do it.

Yes Kris, wasn’t Wes the first as a jazz guitarist? All I know is that I have every one of Wes’ records on vinyl. And many of my favorites are Wes with A&M and Verve. I love all the orchestrations. And Wes’ playing is nothing more than perfect. If you don’t dig pop Wes, you just don’t dig good music, imo.

Or it was a way to get a bigger audience. I doubt if Wes got much out of doing that. He liked his quartets.

Wes got a lot out of that! Wes got paid, way more than he ever had, and worldwide recognition. Okay, so you’re biased against those feel good tunes, or cracking a poor joke. Bumpin?! C’mon man!

Everything Wes played was brilliant and is still brilliant today.

I think I'm going to start working on this emo song. Pretty good melody and chords. He had good songwriting.

Don't know if I'd call Stevie Wonder's music pop, but I love what Deep Blue Organ Trio did with his songs!
