Anyone know about this learnjazzstandards.net?
Jazz Guitar Mastery: Enroll Now
Looks like its hyped up and pure salesman strategies, which I would know. But would like to know if anyone ever tried this. I've seen his YouTube channel Jazz Guitar Lessons - YouTube
Its $497 year or 6 monthly payments of $119 which works out to 714 a year.
Any thoughts?

he's not very good, is he? if you must enroll to an online course check out courses by real players like rodney jones, or get some skype lessons from grasso, mike stern, or whoever floats your boat. why settle for less? this is the beauty and also the bitter truth of our jazz economy. you can interact with the top players in the world for peanuts. try offering roger federer 200 bucks for a tennis lesson...
or apply the dick onstenk method, which is actually proven to work and has the extra benefit of being free.
i'm sorry, but from a professional perspective this is almost a scam:

Well I would have to agree with djg.
As for what I would recommend I think a lot depends on your level. If you are a beginner, signing up for a course with a well known jazz guitarist might be a bit hit and miss, unless you know that person has a proven track record with beginners.
The impression I get is most people use courses much like I think they use books; take what they want and are ready for. That’s the way I’ve always done it. And for advanced students, one lesson with a world class player can keep you in stuff to work on for months and months.
Jazz learners have always been self directed and tbh that’s the best way.
But for those who need a bit more weekly or fortnightly focus, it’s good to find someone who teaches a lot of beginners and is available for regular contact. There are many experienced teachers who are also pretty burning players out there. I can name many from my own circle for example, who are not big on YouTube or anything but are really really good players and experienced educators.
Just being on YouTube opens up a lot of doors though. It’s kind of a completely separate thing. I don’t count myself as any kind of success on YT but people seek you out when they know your face. LJS is capitalising on this and I would expect him to have some uptake, like it or not. I’ve used his backing tracks for example, I think everyone has. He had a good YT business model.
There’s a generation for whom the primary music stars will not be players on the live gigging scene but big music YouTubers. It’s a mixed bag, but I think there’s some amazing aspects to this (and some crappy ones.)
Anyway, I’m planning to possibly do some serious research into this sector at some point as it’s become so
important to many on this forum.

Well that's the first time on JGO I've been compared to a sex worker.

well, on YT you do offer yourself up for anonymous consumption. what used to be a social event is now a depressing one-way street where the consumer does not have the least bit of responsibility. they don't even have to show up physically. if they get tired of you they just hop to the next player of the minute. the only one who gets filthy rich is your pimp. and you better behave because not only is he the only pimp in town, there is just one town...

Does he have to be a 'name' in order to market his knowledge and skills? Not sure that I see the relevance. I declare an interest in that early on when he was just starting out I had something of a dialogue with him ( for free ). I guarantee that he knows his stuff!

Well since YouTube is free, why would you pay unless it's one on one private lessons?. Not putting the guy or his ability down, but there are tons of guitar tutorials for nothing from way more known players.
I really hate players have to be Amway Sales people to survive anymore!

I think if you know what you want to learn you will find a way to teach yourself. But if you are a bit lost, or a true beginner, or just looking for a different perspective then paying for one of these programs may be ok. The price in the op's post seems steep for most of us though.

I keep seeing his commercials on YouTube. I’ve tried a few of his free lessons and they didn’t work for my learning and playing style. I use a host of other free youtube channels, Facebook jazz forums, this site (JGO) and going to live jams (when they return at least) for my jazz guitar lessons. I’d love to make a video comparing me in 2014 to now, my progress and playing without a formal teacher has developed remarkably so there is truth to the idea of self teaching. I know I’d have reached my goals faster with a teacher but I don’t have that kind of time or money. This site (JGO) was critical in getting my first few years together.
and I’m just joking about the blue guitar credibility thing!

A good friend of mine has been using the website and has had great success. YMMV.

If you are looking for online lessons, I cannot recommend Matt Warnock's site enough. He has over 2000 lessons on the site, he does 3 weekly hour-long live group sessions on YouTube in which you can ask questions and he replies, he responds to e-mailed questions incredibly fast (sometimes within minutes), has week-end challenges, weekly challenges, and you can put a video up on a private Youtube channel, send him the link and what feedback you are looking for and he checks it out and gets back to you. I have no idea how he does it all, but he is a great teacher, patient and fun to watch/interact with. When I signed up with him it was $20 a month for all of that, plus all the new content he keeps coming up with; I don't know what it is now, perhaps $30(?) a month... He may even have an annual rate that is cheaper, now that I say that I should probably check that out as I've been with him for a year, and plan on doing another year. I believe that this Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday are free (9 am PST, ugh) so folks can check him out. I can't recommend him too highly, I have really learned a lot from his sessions and camps and personal responses. You can probably go to his website to register for the free sessions this week, but I'm just guessing.
EDIT: This is the link for the free access to the office hours: Easy Jazz Guitar Chords | Matt Warnock Guitar - you supply your email address and then Matt sends out an email with a link to the live session 15 minutes before it starts (8:45 AM PST). I would guess that there are generally 40-50 regulars every week, so a lot of good stuff comes up. Tuesdays Matt goes over one of his written courses, Thursdays are an office hour for any questions, Saturdays are whatever on-going formal course is happening.
Other than being a member of his classes, I am not affiliated with him in any way. I also belong to Frank Vignola's Jazz Studio, but I really get a lot more out of Matt's classes. Just my experience.Last edited by ah.clem; 03-15-2021 at 11:31 PM.

Marc is no question a legit instructor and jazz guitarist. Plus, I really dug his album, which sadly is no longer available to stream on popular sites.
Fair points made, but he instantly loses credibility for playing a blue sparkly glitter telecaster.
I can see why some people get irked by his salesman qualities. He changed his business model a couple years ago (pushing his new Mastery program) and I felt it was overpriced compared to what I was getting with the basic membership, which is no longer available. I ended my membership and have moved on.
Disclosure: As a fellow Canadian, I respect that Marc's created a name for himself internationally as a jazz instructor... something I can only aspire to.

I actually agreed with you and meant no offense. I appreciate your response as I too have spent considerable money and want to make every dollar from here on out count toward actual progress. I am new to the forum so maybe I have a few things to learn on the etiquette. I did not see your private message but I did give Matt a second look because of your response and I got a year membership and putting in some time there. Sent him a message and he responded really quick and is giving me some directions and feedback. So I got you to thank for that so don't feel I don't appreciate your response. I appreciate everyone who take the time out to give me some insight since a lot of people see the post and don't reply and a few others respond with their unrelated stuff, but the majority by far has been very helpful.

If it was 175 a year, even 300 a year I could check it out. But that's a bit steep which is why I'll pass. I was even considering still giving it a try if others on here recommended it highly. I'm not even questioning his validity as a player or as a teacher but without seeing a bit of what's on there I can't go head first not knowing if his teaching style works for me. But who knows maybe in the future. At least for the next year I got myself plenty to work on

Totally agree. He doean't offer up much preview on his new site. His format on YouTube is not what you get inside the coursework. It's well thought out... several modules across skill areas (e.g., Learn the Fretboard, Improv 101, Comping 102, Chord Melody Mastery) that get progressively more challenging. He uses SoundSlicer so you can slowdown and splice the lessons to play along. It also has 50+ transcribed songs and solos, and a user community. I'm not sure how available he is for questions. I never reached out.
Glad you found something that's working. I'm currently doing some of Jens lessons, blues-jazz stuff, but after that I'll be looking for a new online course. I appreciate hearing others' experiences.

I've never been tempted by his tasters. They seem to be all chat.
Jens L and Richie Z are so much more generous.
