Making Practice Fun

One of the first songs I want to learn is Caravan. I have got the head down and wanted to start working on some improv for it. I found a video on YouTube where Tracy Kim shows some simple solo ideas. He provides a PDF of the notes he uses for the C7 and Fm sections. I recorded a backing track with bass drum and vibes and looped the first 12 bars, which is essentially all C. After watching his video a few times and getting the middle eastern feel for his phrasing, I followed the notes from the PDF and started to try to emulate the sound and feel. After about 15 minutes I thought I was sounding pretty good! Now the notes and phrasing was pretty limited, so the next step is to add more scale and chord notes to the note choices and expand the phrases while maintaining the same exotic middle eastern feel. Man am I having fun and feeling like I am making progress. I don't want to put the guitar down!

I will soon move on to the Fm section.

I find it easy to get lost in all that exoticness

I always try to nail the (or at least a) long decending line in bar 12 to set up the Fm
