I posted this on another forum. We'll see if jazz guitarists do better than car guys.

These are the names of bands of the 60's and 70's BEFORE they became famous. The core members were in these groups, but it took a little more effort—and a name change—to hit the big time.

    How many can you identify?

PS—don’t Google and don’t put the answers in your post. I will provide the answers in a day or 2.

Alan Price Rhythm and Blues Combo
    The John Evan Smash
    The Blues Boys
    The Quarrymen
    Mudcrutch
    The Warlocks (SF)
    The Warlocks (NYC)
    Teen King and the Emergencies
    The Tea Set
    The New Yardbirds
    Hour Glass
    The Detours
    Tom and Jerry
    The Cafe Racers
    The Feedback/The Hype
    The Golliwogs
    Chad Allen and the Expressions
    Roundabout
    The Hawks
    The Pendletones
Wee Johnny Hayes and the Blue Cats
My Backyard/The Noble Five/The One Percent
    Pud
    The Artistics
    Angel and the Snake
    The Big Thing
    Tradewinds/There Were 4/TW4
    Saratoga
    The Jet Set/The Beefeaters

I only knew 10 of these, so don't feel bad if you don't know them all.

What part of "PS—don’t Google and don’t put the answers in your post. I will provide the answers in a day or 2." didn't you guys understand??

    Just kidding...

Take the quiz before scrolling down. I will provide the answers tomorrow.

You guys are both correct. IIRC VU found out there was another band in the Bay area with the name Warlocks, so they changed to Velvet Underground. VU and GD are both iconic names, so hard to fault them. Warlocks does sound like a heavy metal band, ala Scorpions or Megadeath.

One observation is that the original names were in most cases pretty lame. Getting a new drummer and changing your name seemed to be just the ticket for most of these groups.

Keep in mind as folks wrestle with the test in the OP...

According to comedian Charles Fleischer (the true originator of the quote):

"If you remember the 60s, you really weren't there".

So, true to form, the only one I knew is the Quarrymen, and that is only because I read one of those Beatle biographies AFTER the 60s.

Blast from the past! You must've been in the Pacific NW in '79, like I was. I can see why they changed that one.

I've always assumed it came from the Ransom E. Olds, founder of REO and Oldsmobile. The Speedwagon was REO's best known vehicle.

That's right, but the local lore is that they chose that for a particular symbolic meaning too-- the R, E, and O correspond to the high schools the original members played at when youngsters...

Ah, hadn't heard that one. My obscure references are all a bit further east.
