why do people write that stuff ?

its like an aphorism enjoining you to not

Over the years, my now 89-year-old father would say: "This too shall pass".

    For all guitar tinkerers...

"If it ain't broke, fix it til it is."

    And from ferris bueller:

"Life moves pretty fast...if you don't stop and look around once in a while, you might miss it."

Rock music is three chords, played for an audience of thousands. Jazz is the opposite.

My dad: "I was born at night but it wasn't LAST night." (Don't BS me.)

"The shortcut is the long way round." This one puzzled me the first time I heard it but the gist is, 'when you stop trying to find shortcuts and just do the damn thing, you'll find it took less time than you wasted looking for shortcuts.' As a guitarist with a hundred or so guitar books, this is painfully obvious to me...now.

Not to beat a dead horse, or kick an aphorism when it's down, but I was not so long ago involved in a situation where I actually used the phrase while discussing job dissatisfaction with my wife.

I spent several years driving long haul semi tuck and built a reputation with the trucking company for getting the load picked up and delivered, no matter what, without any drama involved.

Consequently, I became the guy they saddled with crap loads that were already behind schedule or loads that had to be driven all night to be delivered first thing the next morning, Most of these loads meant driving into Seattle/Tacoma area, which amounted to high stress and low mileage pay. Most loads out of that area were headed to Spokane. So you'd end up waiting around all day for another load that sucked and didn't pay well. Invariably, you'd get stuck bouncing back and forth between Spokane and Seattle for a week or more making minimum pay and wearing yourself out.

It is a pessimistic saying, but it's usually something somebody only says after they find themselves in a situation where being the good guy and doing the right thing doesn't result in being rewarded or actually results in being punished.

My wife was involved in a situation that is even more appropriate to this bit of wisdom.

She worked at a book store, and one evening while balancing the cash register, there was $50 missing. The store manager demanded my wife enter false numbers into the accounting ledger to cover the missing money. My wife refused. Eventually the store owner found out about the incident. The manager was reprimanded, but during the meeting, she insisted my wife had betrayed her and she she could no longer work with my wife. The owner, faced with losing a long-time employee and manager or a short-time sales clerk, decided it was better for him to just fire my wife.

Alas, no good deed goes unpunished.

From Louis Armstrong website, some great quotes.

"If you have to ask what jazz is, you'll never know."

"Man, all music is folk music. You ain’t never heard no horse sing a song, have you?"

"If I don’t practice for a day, I know it. If I don’t practice for two days, the critics know it. And if I don’t practice for three days, the public knows it."

“If ya ain't got it in ya, ya can't blow it out ya.”

"Musicians don't retire; they stop when there's no more music in them."

"There is two kinds of music, the good, and the bad. I play the good kind."

    "You blows who you is."

"There are some people that if they don't know, you can't tell them."

"We all do 'do, re, mi,' but you have got to find the other notes yourself."

"The memory of things gone is important to a jazz musician. Things like old folks singing in the moonlight in the back yard on a hot night or something said long ago."

“My whole life, my whole soul, my whole spirit is to blow that horn...”

“Seems to me it ain't the world that's so bad but what we're doing to it, and all I'm saying is: see what a wonderful world it would be if only we'd give it a chance. Love, baby - love. That's the secret.”

    "What we play is life."
